  • An ‘Antiquity-Dealing-Business on a Large Scale’

    Open Access•Daniel Potter, Daniel M Potter•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the History of…•2025•Referencias: 9

This article explores the entanglement of archaeology and the antiquities trade in Egypt and Sudan during the antiquities rush of the British colonial period. I argue that the buying and selling of archaeological objects played a central role in the business of archaeology, which relied on the cyclical extraction and transfer of financial and archaeological capital. This cycle operated through distinct production stages of funding, acquisition, e…

  • Reducing educational inequality through research-practice partnerships

Open Access•Daniel Potter, Erin Baumgartner et al.•ARTICLE•Phi Delta Kappan•2021

Although researchers have done effective work at describing the inequities that plague schools, they have been less successful at making headway in addressing them, largely because their work remains disconnected from the schools that have to try to use the research. Through research-practice partnerships, researchers are able to stay in touch with the educators on the ground, craft research questions with their actual problems in mind, and help …

This article is the publication of an indurated limestone standing statue, now in Montrose Museum (ANGUSalive M1980.4578), identified as a Sistrum-player. The statue was collected in 1834 by Dr James Burnes IV, a relative of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, during a journey from India to Scotland. Stylistic features of the statue and its inscription are discussed here for the first time. Her family tree is also reconstructed based on known objects…

  • Family and Schooling Experiences in Racial/Ethnic Academic Achievement Gaps

    Open Access•Daniel Potter, David S Morris•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2017•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 51

The gap in academic skills between white and historically disadvantaged racial/ethnic minority children exists at school entry and grows over time. Research over the last two decades has identified the important role of schools in perpetuating these disparities and the limited role of family experiences. Much of this research, however, has relied on strategies that consider only snapshots of children's experiences and has assumed that family and …

  • Psychosocial Well-Being in Children of Same-Sex Parents

    Open Access•Daniel Potter, Emma C Potter•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 63

Families in the United States are increasingly diverse, which has given rise to questions about the consequences these new family forms have for children's outcomes. This study uses a life course perspective to examine the association between family transitions, nontraditional family structures (with particular attention to same-sex parent families), and children's psychosocial well-being. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten cohor…

  • The Social Process Behind Inequalities in Children's Mental Health

    Open Access•Daniel Potter•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2013•Referencias: 8

More advantaged children (both in terms of social class and racial/ethnic membership) appear protected from symptoms of mental health problem, but a pattern has emerged in which these children who tend to have better mental health are more likely to be diagnosed with certain mental health disorders. These patterns have led some researchers and professionals to wonder if the qualifications for diagnosis are culturally biased or might unfairly favo…

The indigenous plants and fish of Niger are incorporated into the Songhai people's daily life but are largely underemphasised in development programmes. In this paper we describe the culturally appropriate foods of Tallé, Niger. Based on information obtained from 42 participants using interviews and focus groups, we identified 11 commonly consumed fish species, 22 plant species, and nine factors that made them culturally appropriate: taste, perce…

    Open Access•Daniel Potter•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2012•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 42

Children in traditional families (i.e., married, 2 biological parents) tend to do better than their peers in nontraditional families. An exception to this pattern appears to be children from same-sex parent families. Children with lesbian mothers or gay fathers do not exhibit the poorer outcomes typically associated with nontraditional families. Studies of same-sex parent families, however, have relied on a static conceptualization of the family …

    Open Access•J Roksa, Daniel Potter•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2011•Citada por: 75•Referencias: 38

A growing body of research has examined how cultural capital, recently broadened to include not only high-status cultural activities but also a range of different parenting practices, influences children's educational success. Most of this research assumes that parents' current class location is the starting point of class transmission. However, does the ability of parents to pass advantages to their children, particularly through specific cultur…

  • Psychosocial Well-Being and the Relationship Between Divorce and Children's Academic Achievement

    Open Access•Daniel Potter•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2010•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 37

As an unprecedented number of children live in families experiencing divorce, researchers have developed increasingly complex explanations for the consequences associated with marital dissolution. Current accounts focus on changes to family finances, destabilized parenting practices, elevated parental conflict, and deterioration of the parent-child relationship, to explain the impact of divorce. A less studied explanation draws attention to child…
