  • Cinephilia, take three

    Open Access•David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2024

This article proposes a modified reading of Thomas Elsaesser’s theories of cinephilia, taking into account the new viewing practices established by the rise of online media streaming. Elsaesser characterised early film culture (labelled as ‘take one’) as rooted in celluloid and marked by a longing to view films that were not always easily available. By contrast, his characterisation of the later ‘take two’ era is one in which each new distributio…

  • From active police duty to civilian life

Open Access•Annie Venville, Tina Kostecki et al.•ARTICLE•The Police Journal Theory…•2024

This qualitative study explores the contribution of peer support to the mental health and wellbeing of police veterans. Thematic analysis of interview data with veterans ( n = 7), partners ( n = 1) and veteran peer support officers ( n = 10) captures the participant experience. Two key themes were integral to the contribution peer support makes to veteran wellbeing. First, the centrality of police identity and the importance of belonging to a sup…

  • No longer “As Crappy as Possible”

David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2021

This article will consider the recent ‘remastered’ editions of the first twelve seasons of the Comedy Central animated series South Park (1997-), and the impact that this may have upon the meanings associated with the original episodes. The show is now produced in a high-definition format, and most circulating versions of new instalments present any swearing ‘unbleeped’. These choices were not present from the very beginning of the series, howeve…

  • Cuphead

    Open Access•David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•The Journal of Popular Culture•2019

The videogame Cuphead (2017) has generated a great deal of attention, in large part due to its art style, which approximates the aesthetics of a 1930s American short cartoon. This article will suggest, however, that this is only one of several past eras that the game gestures towards in its relationship to the present. Most notably, Cuphead speaks to the trajectory of several animation units whose works have fallen out of copyright, and which hav…

  • Monochrome Mickey

    David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•Journal of Popular Film and…•2018•Referencias: 7

This article considers a recent trend for Disney to produce modern texts that evoke Mickey Mouse's pre-Technicolor days. Unlike James Bond and Batman, Disney still continues to market Mickey as a star (rather than a long-running character), with the sense that there is (somehow) coherence to be found

  • The Prospects of a North American Project

    Open Access•David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2003

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, the governments of Canada and the United States were into the final weeks of fevered negotiations on the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Proponents claimed the dawning of a new age of economic prosperity; detractors bemoaned the end of Canadian sovereignty. Five years later, the three governments of North America, including Mexico, placed the last touches on what was to become the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFT…

  • The Semi-Open Door

    Melvin Cohen, David Mcgowan•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•1990•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

A point frequently noted by students of American political behavior is the divergence between abstract belief and concrete application, especially in the area of civil liberties. This divergence is particularly worrisome when institutionalized in law. Once institutionalized, the abstract v. concrete divergence in a particular period develops a certain rigidity and is likely to be transferred to subsequent periods. If underpinned by important elem…
