This article examines the Old Nubian Miracle of St Menas, preserved in the British Library Ms. Or. 6805, as a unique testimony to Christian traditions in medieval Nubia. While sharing certain motifs with earlier miracles known from Coptic, Greek, and Arabic sources, this text presents a distinctive narrative absent in other traditions. A Window into the Nubian Diet
This paper presents a unique archaeobotanical discovery of stored crops from two domestic structures at Old Dongola in Northern Sudan, dating to the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries CE. The findings provide new insights into aspects of cuisine during the early Funj period (1504–1821 CE) and its historical roots. The assemblage of stored crops—including sorghum, bread wheat, hulled barley, grass pea, cowpea, and radish seeds—reveals a blend of Med…
Assembling a household in the Middle Nile Valley (Old Dongola, Sudan) in the 16th-17th centuries
Old Dongola, with a history reaching back to the 5th century AD, was originally the capital of Makuria, one of the three medieval Nubian kingdoms. After the collapse of Makuria, its capital city saw migratory movements and political changes that resulted in the emergence of new power relations. Excavations at Old Dongola in 2018/2019 led to the discovery of a quarter of wattle-and-daub houses located outside the town walls. The houses, dated to the 17th − 18th century, are arranged in compounds and visibly differ from other dwellings.
