  • Evaluation of restoration approaches on the Inner Mongolian Steppe based on criteria of the Society for Ecological Restoration

Open Access•Feng Zhang, Christina Nilsson et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2020

Ecological restoration is becoming an increasingly common management tool worldwide. However, a challenge still exists on how to effectively monitor restoration outcomes and evaluate restoration success for ecological restoration managers. In this review, the goal is to evaluate whether the research in a degraded area has been sufficient for fostering efficient restoration measures and follow‐up of restoration success based on the Society for Eco…

  • High‐resolution mapping of the world's reservoirs and dams for sustainable river‐flow management

Open Access•Bernhard Lehner, Catherine Reidy Liermann et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Ecology and the…•2011

Despite the recognized importance of reservoirs and dams, global datasets describing their characteristics and geographical distribution are largely incomplete. To enable advanced assessments of the role and effects of dams within the global river network and to support strategies for mitigating ecohydrological and socioeconomic costs, we introduce here the spatially explicit and hydrologically linked Global Reservoir and Dam database (GRanD). As…

Geografisk Tidsskrift—Danish Journal of Geography 110(1):81–98, 2010 An increasing number of land use conflicts involving planning practice, equine activities and businesses and neighbouring landowners and residents have occurred in Swedish peri-urban areas. In a case study the disturbances and benefits arising from horses experienced by residents in two different areas of Sweden were investigated, together with a study of the attitudes of local …

  • Conflicts Associated with Dam Removal in Sweden

    Open Access•Anna G C Lejon, Anna Lejon et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2009•Citada por: 5

The increasing number of deteriorating old dams that need renovation or have lost their function make dam removal a viable management option. There are at least four major reasons for dam removal: safety, law and policy, economy, and ecology. Here we discuss 17 Swedish dams that were recently considered for removal. Because dam removal usually causes controversy, dam removal initiatives may succeed, fail, or result in a compromise such as a bypas…

  • Building Resilience and Adaptation to Manage Arctic Change

F Stuart Chapin, Michael Hoel et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2006•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 10

Unprecedented global changes caused by human actions challenge society's ability to sustain the desirable features of our planet. This requires proactive management of change to foster both resilience (sustaining those attributes that are important to society in the face of change) and adaptation (developing new socioecological configurations that function effectively under new conditions). The Arctic may be one of the last remaining opportunitie…

  • Fragmentation and Flow Regulation of the World's Large River Systems

Open Access•Christina Nilsson, Christer Nilsson et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2005

A global overview of dam-based impacts on large river systems shows that over half (172 out of 292) are affected by dams, including the eight most biogeographically diverse. Dam-impacted catchments experience higher irrigation pressure and about 25 times more economic activity per unit of water than do unaffected catchments. In view of projected changes in climate and water resource use, these findings can be used to identify ecological risks ass…
