Sara Beam, editor and translator, The Trial of Jeanne Catherine
Sara Beam's latest book is a collection of primary sources intended for classroom use.All sixty-one documents, of varying length, centre on one particular case, the 1686 trial of a young single mother, Jeanne Catherine Thomasset, accused of poisoning her own twoyear-old illegitimate daughter and the five-year-old son of the rural wet nurse who is caring for them both.It is not a typical infanticide case, which usually involved the smothering or s…

Alan S. Ross. Daum’s Boys
With Daum’s Boys: Schools and the Republic of Letters in Early Modern Germany, Alan S. Ross makes a valuable contribution to our knowledge of seventeenth-century German intellectual life at the local level. The Latin school of Zwickau was one of hundreds of such institutions (103 in Albertine Saxony alone) scattered throughout the cities and towns of the empire, but until now our understanding of their operation and significance has been based la…

From Sacrament to Contract

In so doing, Witte shows how we arrived at the notion of marriage as contract. The Family, Culture, and Religion series offers informed and responsible analyses of the state of the American family from a religious perspec…

Beginning with t…
