The dynamics of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon are complex. A growing debate considers the extent to which deforestation is a result of the expansion of the Brazilian soy industry. Most recent analyses suggest that deforestation is driven by the expansion of cattle ranching, rather than soy. This paper reports the results of an investigation into the behaviour of the market for private house-building land in England and Wales in the 1960s and 1970s. This paper presents the results of a time-series analysis of short-term changes in the conditions prevailing in regional labour markets.
