Stakeholders' views on siting in-stream tidal energy projects in urban and remote communities in the United States
Developers have proposed many in-stream tidal projects, but few commercial-scale devices have moved beyond the planning stages to construction and testing. To better understand social impediments to pilot project siting, this comparative case study was conducted in urban Puget Sound, Washington and remote Iguigig, Alaska. Stakeholder interviews were coded to identify themes about project development. Providing local renewable energy, advancing sc…
One well-planned and executed exchange is better than two
Fisheries learning exchanges (FLEs) bring together fisheries stakeholders to share best practices. Recent research has shown that there are various factors that determine a FLE’s success. The objective of this case study was to probe the applicability of and refine existing guidelines on FLE best practices by examining a FLE where a delegation of fishers from Andavadoaka, Madagascar traveled to Bahia de los Angeles, Mexico to share knowledge surr…
Environmental impacts and food loss and waste in the U.S. aquatic food system
Aquatic foods vary widely in energy use, GHGe, and blue water use. • All forms of sockeye salmon, frozen Alaska pollock, and canned tuna had the lowest overall environmental impacts. • 22–24% of the energy, GHGe, and blue water in aquatic food systems is lost to food waste. Aquatic food systems support global food and nutrition security, livelihoods, and economies, but put significant environmental pressure on the planet. The United States (U.S.)…
