Agricultural Output and Productivity in the Former Soviet Republics
The paper reviews agricultural development in the fifteen former Soviet republics over the period 1965-1998. Production functions are estimated and productivity differences and changes calculated. Large differences were found in terms of productivity and growth between the republics. The differences grew after 1990 reflecting variation in reform policies
Prices versus Quantities
Regulation regimes subject to the influence of interest groups are compared. It is shown that the allocation of the regulated commodity varies with the implemented control and that the advantage of prices (versus quotas) increases with the elasticity of the demand for or the supply of the commodity and decreases with the number of organized producers in the regulated industry. The prevailing view of new mechanical technology is that it has, in large part, pushed labor out of agriculture. An alternative hypothesis is that labor has been pulled out of agriculture by higher wages in nonfarm occupations. The mechanical cotton harvester is used to test the two hypotheses. In this paper we construct and empirically test a theory of the agricultural firm which explains the long-term growth in farm size in the United States. Typically the U.S. farm unit is a family enterprise. Research and productivity in wheat in Israel
The introduction of the new Green Revolution wheat varieties to Israel is reviewed and analysed. It was found that the first stage varieties (developed from local Mexican wheats) did not have a significant impact on yields in Israel. Dwarf varieties and new crosses bred in Israel from Mexican genetic material contributed significantly to yield increases. Returns to local research are estimated. Research and Productivity in Wheat and Maize
A measure of agricultural research output in 75 wheat- and maize-growing countries was utilized to explain increases in yield per unit land in these crops over the period 1948-68. Several alternative specifications were tried, incorporating direct contribution of indigenous research as well as "borrowing" of outside knowledge.
