  • A Probable Reason for Qur’ānic Prohibition of Ribā

Muhammad Mazhar Iqbal, Anwar Shah•ARTICLE•ISLAMIC STUDIES•2024

The compounding period is generally not stated explicitly; rather, it is inferred from the repayment schedule of a loan and bond. For a given principal and inte…

  • Economic Rationale of the Prohibition of Interest

Muhammad Mazhar Iqbal, Anwar Shah•ARTICLE•ISLAMIC STUDIES•2019

Conventional economist, in particular neo-classical, assumes that self-interest is the guiding principle of economic behaviour and there exist no fallacies of composition. That is, whatever is in the interest of an individual is also in the interest of a society. Keynesian school of thought, on the other hand, though admits fallacies of composition such as “paradox of thrift” and “liquidity trap,” but they believe that such anomalies can be resol…

While some authors argue that there is a positive relationship between decentralization and corruption, others claim that decentralization in fact leads to a reduction in the level of corruption. This important policy question has not yet been laid to rest since previous empirical work simply uses eclectic regressi…

Bob McLarty does not find the case for a fiscal need approach to equalization convincing for four reasons. First, according to him, given that multiple objectives are pursued under the Canadian Equalization program, economic analysis is not of much use to policymakers. Second, a fiscal need approach compensates provinces for their past mistakes. Third, it will create perverse program design incentives for the provinces. Fourth, such an approach w…

This paper examines the consequences of this neglect both conceptually as well as empirically. The paper concludes that a program of equalization that ignores the expenditure side cannot be defended on economic efficiency and equity grounds. Further, such a program might not be consistent with the consti…
