  • Effect of a Behavioral Change Communication Strategy Coupled With Small‐Quantity Lipid‐Based or Micro‐Nutrient Supplements on Stunting and Obesity in Children in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala

Open Access•Carolina Gonzalez Acero, Sebastian Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2025

The co-existence of childhood stunting and obesity is a public health problem in Guatemala and Latin America. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of unsweetened small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) coupled with a behavior change communication (BCC) strategy on the double burden of malnutrition. We conducted a three-arm randomized-control trial with two-stage cluster sampling of households with children under …

  • The dirty business of eliminating open defecation

Open Access•Lisa Cameron, Paul Gertler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

We examine the impacts of a sanitation program designed to eliminate open defecation in at-scale randomized field experiments in four countries: India, Indonesia, Mali, and Tanzania. The programs - all variants of the widely-used Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach - increase village private sanitation coverage in all four locations by 7-39 percentage points. We use the experimentally-induced variation in access to sanitation to identi…

  • Refrigeration and child growth

Open Access•Sebastian Martinez, Juan M Murguia et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2021

Child stunting in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) decreased from 22.9% in 1990 to 9.6% in 2017. While stunting rates in the region were falling, access to electricity and refrigeration were on the rise. Despite a large body of evidence surrounding the effects of refrigeration on food consumption, and separately of the importance of food consumption for child health and nutrition, surprisingly few studies explore the potential effects of ref…

  • Can Small Incentives Have Large Payoffs? Health Impacts of a Cash Transfer Program in Bolivia

Pablo Celhay, Pablo A Celhay et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2021•Referencias: 34

We study the effects of a conditional cash transfer for health care utilization, equivalent to 1% of monthly household consumption, on child survival in Bolivia. Using census data and an instrument for program take-up, we show that the intervention increased the survival rates of birth cohorts exposed to the program by 3.8% to 14.7%. A pathways analysis shows higher rates of early antenatal care and skilled birth attendance for women and a higher…

  • Measuring socioeconomic gaps in nutrition and early child development in Bolivia

Open Access•Pablo Celhay, Sebastian Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2020

These findings highlight the need for targeted public policies that invest in multiple dimensions of child development as early as possible, including health, nutrition and cognitive and verbal stimulation. From a policy perspective, the large socioeconomic gaps in nutrition outcomes documented here reinforce the need to strengthen efforts that tackle the multiple causes of malnutrition for the poorest

  • Preschool and Child Development under Extreme Poverty

Sophie Naudeau, Sebastian Martinez et al.•BOOK•2017

This study analyzed the impact of a community-based preschool program on child development and schooling outcomes in high-poverty areas of rural Mozambique. Preschools were randomly assigned to 30 of 76 eligible communities. Using a panel survey of 2,000 households with preschool aged children, the study found that children who attended preschool experienced gains in cognitive development, communication, fine motor skills, and socio-emotional ski…

  • Generating Skilled Self-Employment in Developing Countries

Christopher Blattman, Nathan Fiala et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2014

We study a government program in Uganda designed to help the poor and unemployed become self-employed artisans, increase incomes, and thus promote social stability. Young adults in Uganda’s conflict-affected north were invited to form groups and submit grant proposals for vocational training and business start-up. Funding was randomly assigned among screened and eligible groups. Treatment groups received unsupervised grants of $382 per member. Gr…

  • Investing Cash Transfers to Raise Long-Term Living Standards

Paul Gertler, Paul J Gertler et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2012

Using data from a randomized experiment, we find that poor rural Mexican households invested part of their cash transfers from the Oportunidades program in productive assets, increasing agricultural income by almost 10 percent after 18 months of benefits. We estimate that for each peso transferred, households consume 74 cents and invest the rest, permanently increasing long-term consumption by about 1.6 cents. Results suggest that cash transfers …
