  • The value of hybrid evaluation methods for targeted social assistance programs

Open Access•Jiajun Lan, Yinghao Pan et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Economic Policy•2026

Evaluating the targeting of large‐scale social assistance programs is crucial for improving public administration. Traditional approaches, relying solely on quantitative proxy means testing or qualitative community inputs, have limitations in capturing complex socioeconomic realities. This paper argues for employing hybrid methods that integrate quantitative and qualitative data sources to comprehensively assess targeting accuracy. Using China's …

  • Public Health, Human Capital, and Economic Growth

Fan He, Wei Huang et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

This paper investigates the long-term impacts of China’s nationwide public health campaigns targeting malaria, measles, and meningitis between the 1960s and 1980s. Exploiting regional variation in precampaign disease prevalence across birth cohorts, we show that these interventions generated sizable improvements in education, cognition, health, and income. As an illustrative case, individuals from high-malaria regions who were fully exposed to th…

  • When Land Expropriation Increases Income

Zhihao He, Yinghao Pan•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2026

While land expropriation historically impoverished rural populations in developing countries, we find contrasting evidence from China. Using nationally representative panel data and a generalised difference-in-differences approach, we show that expropriation increases household total net income by 8.7%, with larger long-term effects. Non-farm income rises by 16.5%, with salary income increasing by 40.5% as households shift to higher-productivity …

  • Pinching Pennies

Open Access•Ying Fan, Yinghao Pan•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2025

This paper focuses on a series of increases in the mortgage rate in China and investigates its impacts on household consumption. Based on granular diary data, our difference‐in‐differences estimations imply that compared with that of homeowners without mortgage obligations, the average propensity of mortgagors to consume decreases by 2.2 and 2.9 percentage points after the announcement and reset of mortgage rates, respectively. The results are ma…

  • One-Child Policy, Marriage Distortion, and Welfare Loss

Wei Huang, Yinghao Pan et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We investigate how exposure to the One-Child Policy (OCP) during early adulthood affects marriage and fertility in China. Exploring fertility penalties across provinces over time and the different implementations by ethnicity, we show that the OCP significantly increases the unmarried rate among the Han ethnicity but not among the minorities. The OCP increases Han-minority marriages in regions where Han-minority couples are allowed an additional …

  • The Hidden Cost of Prenatal Heat Stress Exposure

Jiaowei Gong, Xiaoyu Li et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2025•Referencias: 78

This paper examines how exposure to extreme heat during gestation affects psychological well-being in adulthood by using nationally representative data from China. We find that prenatal exposure to heat stress significantly increases unhappiness, life dissatisfaction, and depressive symptoms later in life. These adverse effects are particularly pronounced among women and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those born in vulnerab…

  • Building bridges of trust

Open Access•Jiajun Lan, Yihan Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2024

In this study, we examine the interplay between regional digital financial inclusion and social capital with a focus on social trust. Our empirical analysis shows that regions with enhanced digital financial services experience a significant boost in social trust. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in regional digital financial inclusion correlates with an approximate increase of 1% in social trust among frequent Internet users compa…

Hao Yang, Jing Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 20

Institutional theory holds that local governance is essential in shaping regional economic activity. This study evaluates whether local economic growth targets offset the detrimental effect of nationwide policy uncertainty on local business performance. Regression analyses of data from industrial firms and manually collected data on city economic growth targets in China show that higher local growth targets result in greater corporate investment,…
