  • When Information is Not Enough

    Open Access•Kehinde F Ajayi, Willa Friedman et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025•Referencias: 33

We implemented a large-scale randomised controlled trial encompassing 900 junior high schools in Ghana, a country with universal secondary school choice, to study whether providing students and parents with information on school characteristics and selection strategies improved outcomes in a centralised school selection mechanism. Information changed households’ preferences and the characteristics of schools to which they applied. Students gained…

  • Selection, training, and importance of school heads and supervisors across Africa

  • Experimental Evidence on Four Policies to Increase Learning at Scale

    Open Access•Annie Duflo, Jessica Kiessel et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 1

We partnered with the Ghanaian government to simultaneously test four methods of increasing achievement—assistant-led remedial pull-out lessons, remedial after-school lessons, smaller class sizes and teacher-implemented partial day tracking—in schools with low and heterogeneous student achievement. The interventions increased student learning by about 0.1 standard deviations, rising to 0.4 standard deviations when adjusting for imperfect implemen…

  • Schooling, Wealth, Risky Sexual Behaviour, and HIV/Aids in Sub-Saharan Africa

Adrienne M Lucas, Adrienne Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

Economic growth and development have improved human health in many regions, while sub-Saharan Africa continues to lag behind. Economic theory and the existing empirical evidence suggest that development may not generate large reductions in the leading cause of adult mortality in the region, HIV/AIDS, and may increase risky sexual behaviour. We examine the association between schooling/material standard of living and HIV risk using data from more …

  • Improving Early‐grade Literacy in East Africa

Open Access•Adrienne M Lucas, Adrienne Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2014•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 1

Primary school enrollments have increased rapidly in sub‐Saharan Africa, spurring concerns about low levels of learning. We analyze field experiments in Kenya and Uganda that assessed whether the Reading to Learn intervention, implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation in both countries, improved early‐grade literacy as measured by common assessments. We find that Ugandan literacy (in Lango) increased by 0.2 standard deviations. We find a smaller eff…

  • The Impact of Malaria Eradication on Fertility

    Adrienne M Lucas, Adrienne Lucas•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2013•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 22

The malaria eradication campaign that started in Sri Lanka in the late 1940s virtually eliminated malaria transmission on the island. I use the preeradication differences in malaria endemicity within Sri Lanka to identify the effect of malaria eradication on fertility and child survival. Malaria eradication increased the number of live births through increasing age-specific fertility and causing an earlier first birth. The effect of malaria on th…
