    The foundation of our knowledge of the Salisbury Avon and its terraces was laid by Clement Reid (1902), * whos work was later modified by the s udi s of Osborne White (1917), Bury (1920, 1923, 1933), and J. F. N. Green (1936, 1946). The paper by Green on the terraces of the Bournemouth area (1946) was the first to employ intensive geomorphological methods to problems of river erosion in this area.
