Open Access•Yueyan Dong, Jing Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Quarterly•2025

Understanding how institutional leadership influences research productivity is crucial for advancing higher education policy and practice, yet empirical evidence remains limited in non‐Western contexts. Drawing on upper echelons theory and a longitudinal dataset spanning 20 years (2000–2019) of 392 presidential appointments across Chinese universities, this study examines how presidential capabilities affect institutional research performance. • Does the High-Speed Rail Improve Employment in Peripheral Cities? Evidence From China’s Beijing–Shanghai HSR Line

Open Access•Nannan Yu, Tianhang Cui et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2023

This study addresses the impacts of high-speed rail (HSR) on the employment rate on the periphery of HSR-connected cities. Using the Chinese municipal-level data sets of 2001 to 2017s, we have found that HSR could improve the average employment in peripheral cities on the route. However, HSR negatively affects employment in small and medium-sized peripheral cities while the large-sized peripheral cities benefit from its operation. Our evidence sh…

In 1999, the Chinese government implemented a higher education enrollment expansion policy to improve education equality. Now, its positive impact on educational equality is contested. This study attempts to identify the link between city administrative level and tertiary attainment in the context of the policy. They calculate the reciprocal matrix and combine it with the β-convergence model and spatial econometrics to analyse the relationships between DMI and regional economic growth. Their findings indicate that the relation between these two variables is n…
