Exploring serial patterns in negative hotel reviews
This study examines the dynamics of negative customer reviews in the hospitality industry. Drawing on a dataset of 80,521 negative hotel reviews from Booking.com, we identify eleven serially correlated aspects of customer experience where current customer complaints predict future ones. These patterns suggest the presence of emerging issues that impact multiple customers over time and show that the size of the time series effects in hospitality c…
International Child Law
This book examines the rights of the child using the global framework of the United Nations International Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989. Analysing both public and private international legal aspects, this cross-disciplinary text promotes a holistic understanding of the ongoing development of child law, children’s rights and the protection of the child. In-depth analyses of the following topic areas are included: Childhood in the digi…
The Ombudsman Enterprise and Administrative Justice
The statutory duty of public service ombudsmen (PSO) is to investigate claims of injustice caused by maladministration in the provision of public services. This book examines the modern role of the ombudsman within the overall emerging system of administrative justice and makes recommendations as to how PSO should optimize their potential within the wider administrative justice context. Recent developments are discussed and long standing question…
The Potential and Promise of Communications Procedures under the Third Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child
The Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (OP3-CRC) presents new opportunities for States and non-state actors/interest groups to advance the cause of children’s rights in the global context. Since international legal apparatus for protecting human rights is generally weak, and depends largely on cooperation and support of States, the best approach would be to explore how to integrate available mechanisms to maximis…
Putting the Ombudsman into Constitutional Context
This article argues that in debates on constitutional reform more attention should be paid to the potential contained in the office of the ombudsman. It highlights four key areas of the constitutional activity in which the ombudsman is well designed to make a significant contribution. The argument is also made that both within and outside the UK there have been a number of developments in ombudsman practice in recent years that suggest that more …
International Criminalisation and Child Welfare Protection’
The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography has two overall aims: (i) to strengthen international criminalisation and (ii) to provide welfare protection for child victims. This article reviews the context of the Protocol including the work of the Special Rapporteur. It examines reservations and declarations made by states upon ratification and provides …

Exporting Activity in Transitional Economies
This study represents the first enterprise level analysis of the determinants of exporting in transitional economies, and focuses on privatised manufacturing firms in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Employing models developed from the existing literature on enterprise-level trade, results derived from longitudinal data suggest that the most important influences on a firm's decision to export are company size and the non-monotonic, curvilinear influe…
Anglo-American Contributions to Japanese and German Corporate Governance after World War Two
After over 50 years, it is pertinent at a time when corporate governance (CG) is a controversial subject, especially in ‘transition’ economies, to reflect on the immediate post-World War Two period as potentially a miniature ‘laboratory experiment’ in CG. In this period, occupying US and UK military governments were in a very strong position to reform CG in Japan and Germany respectively, in their own images. It turns out that many of their regul…

The social fund and judicial review
There have been five full hearings of judicial review applications in Great Britain since discretionary payments under the social fund came into being in April 1988. There have also been three applications heard in the High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland. The questions raised have varied from fundamental challenges to the direction-making powers of the Secretary of State to matters of construction, in particular questions related to the eli…

Privatisation and buy‐outs in the USSR
THE NEED FOR FUNDAMENTAL REFORM in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe is well recognised; so too are the problems of transition to a market economy.1 Nowhere is this more evident than in the USSR, which is under pressure from Western governments and lenders to harden and accelerate economic reforms. Great problems exist in respect of a need for major capital investment, the development of managerial and entrepreneurial skills, the extent…
Regional policies in retrospect
Buck T. and Atkins M. (1983) Regional policies in retrospect: an application of analysis of variance, Reg. Studies 17, 181–189. British regional policies have generally used subsidies on manufacturing investment to encourage employment growth in problem areas. Successive studies have tried to identify the proportion of employment growth in the Development Areas that can be attributed to these policies as part of a wider exercise to estimate the f…
