  • (In) Accuracy in Algorithmic Profiling of the Unemployed – An Exploratory Review of Reporting Standards

    Open Access•Patrick Gallagher, Ray Griffin•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

Public Employment Services (PES) increasingly use automated statistical profiling algorithms (ASPAs) to ration expensive active labour market policy (ALMP) interventions to those they predict at risk of becoming long-term unemployed (LTU). Strikingly, despite the critical role played by ASPAs in the operation of public policy, we know very little about how the technology works, particularly how accurate predictions from ASPAs are. As a vital firs…

  • The Politics of Banking in Ireland

Patrick Gallagher, Seán Ó Riain et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Irish Politics•2021

The chapter traces the historical development of banking and finance in Ireland. The financial system has historically been characterized by domestic economic weakness alongside significant activity by foreign firms, with state agencies filling the gap. Overall, the sector has been vulnerable to internationalization, and booms and risks. The chapter explores how, through the 1990s, it transformed from a sleepy backwater to one of the most financi…

  • Large Banks, Market-based Banking, and the Financialisation of Danish Mortgage Markets

    Patrick Gallagher•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2021•Referencias: 17

This paper puts forward three arguments; firstly, the origions of Danish market-based banking can be traced to the shift by a small group of large commercial banks into the mortgage lending business. Secondly, the Danish case demonstrates the centrality of housing and the politics of mortgage market liberalisation to the rise of market-based banking. And finally, that national diversity in the form of market-based banking mattered for Danish fina…

  • Prevalence, Patterns and Correlates of Cigarette Smoking in Male Adolescents in Northern Jordan, and the Influence of Waterpipe Use and Asthma Diagnosis

    Open Access•Nihaya Al-Sheyab, Nihaya Al‐Sheyab et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Our study investigates the prevalence, patterns and predictors of tobacco smoking among early adolescent males in Northern Jordan and whether asthma diagnosis affects smoking patterns. A descriptive cross sectional design was used. Males in grades 7 and 8 from four randomly selected high schools in the city of Irbid were enrolled. Data on waterpipe (WP) use and cigarette smoking patterns were obtained (n = 815) using a survey in Arabic language. …

  • Initial Validation of a Self-Report Measure of the Extent of and Reasons for Medication Nonadherence

    Corrine I Voils, Matthew L Maciejewski et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•Referencias: 29

BACKGROUND: Self-report measures of medication nonadherence confound the extent of and reasons for medication nonadherence. Each construct is assessed with a different type of psychometric model, which dictates how to establish reliability and validity. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the psychometric properties of a self-report measure of medication nonadherence that assesses separately the extent of nonadherence and reasons for nonadherence. RESEARCH D…

  • A Self-Regulatory Mechanism for Personality Trait Stability

Open Access•Patrick Gallagher, William Fleeson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2011

Despite the considerable influence of situational factors and the resulting variability in behavior, individuals maintain stable average ways of acting. The purpose of the current research was to investigate one possible explanation for this stability. It was hypothesized that behaviors that are at levels different from the actor’s average trait levels ( contra-trait behaviors) demand more effort, or self-control, than do trait-typical behaviors.…

  • The implications of Big Five standing for the distribution of trait manifestation in behavior

William Fleeson, Patrick Gallagher•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2009•Citada por: 49

One of the fundamental questions in personality psychology is whether and how strongly trait standing relates to the traits that people actually manifest in their behavior when faced with real pressures and real consequences of their actions. One reason this question is fundamental is the common belief that traits do not predict how individuals behave, which leads to the reasonable conclusion that traits are not important to study. However, this …

  • Blood pressure and social class in a Jamaican community

    W W Dressler, G A Grell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1988•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 16

A study of social factors and blood pressure was conducted in a Jamaican community among a sample of 199 persons ages 30 to 50. After controlling for obesity, age, and respondent tension (and other covariates), interaction effects of social class x sex for systolic and diastolic blood pressure were found. Blood pressure increased with increasing social class for males and decreased with increasing social class for females

  • Social support and arterial pressure in a central Mexican community

    W W Dressler, Alfonso Chacón Mata et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1986

Research on the relationship of social support and arterial blood pressure was conducted in a town in central Mexico. A culturally appropriate measure of social support was developed assessing perceived support from relatives, friends, neighbors, and compadres (ritual kin). The effects of perceived support from these four sources were compared to the effects of the amount of reported social contacts. For males, more support from all four sources …
