Development of a Predictive Model for Cardiac Dysfunction in MIS-C Patients Utilizing Laboratory Biomarkers
This model identified widely available biomarkers to successfully predict systolic dysfunction in MIS-C patients. Those at high risk of systolic dysfunction had higher peak laboratory values for C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and procalcitonin early on. A regularized logistic regression model was validated to provide excellent discrimination for LVSD

A Balliol quartet and the welfare state
This article sets Christianity and Social Order into the context of William Temple's contemporaries at Balliol College, with a focus on Beveridge and Tawney, and Arnold Toynbee in a previous generation. It explores who first developed the concept of the 'welfare state
Parrillo v Italy
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled for the first time on the question of whether Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights encompasses the right to make use of embryos obtained from in vitro fertilization (IVF) for the purpose of donating to scientific research. The case of Parrillo v Italy application no 46470/11, 27 August 2015, raises questions concerning the legal status of the embryo and the consequences of that status i…
Succour for the Faithful and Defeat for the Moor
The 2005 restoration of José Luzán's paintings for the chapel of Nuestra Señora de Zaragoza la Vieja, in the church of San Miguel de los Navarros, Zaragoza provides new opportunities to study the work of the city’s leading religious painter of the mid-eighteenth century. Situated in his own parish church, these paintings for the Confraternity of Nuestra Señora de Zaragoza la Vieja reveal Luzán as an inventive painter of Christian iconography and …
Towards an English narrative of democracy
This article explores the opportunity for, and some of the political, ideological and institutional impediments to, the articulation of an English narrative of democracy. Such a narrative would locate an understanding of recent developments in the politics, governance and political economy of England within the much broader and challenging framework of the political history of England, and in particular the English tradition of radical thinking a…
Jesus' Transfiguration and the Believers' Transformation
Simon Lee examines Jesus' transfiguration story found in the narrative account of Mark, tracing the development of its multiple readings through the first two centuries of the Christian era. The transfiguration story is especially interesting for the study of early Christianity, since the story reveals Jesus' divine glory in his lifetime. This study pays special attention to texts in which Peter is described as being the main witness to the event…
The rock of stability? The political economy of the Brown government
This article seeks to demonstrate how each of the three core components of the British model of political economy developed during Gordon Brown's tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the assumptions underlying them, have been undermined during Brown's first 16 months as prime minister. Each of the trends that have contributed towards the UK's economic transition from growth to recession is shown to have begun during Brown's tenure as chance…

The Legacy of Homer
Stranded on the Common Ground
In the policy debates about international competitiveness, the ubiquity of the entrepreneur has become so widespread as to occupy the common ground of political economy. However, at the heart of this debate, the seminal work of Michael Porter has tended to overlook the importance of decentralised democratic political institutions for competitive advantage. This article compares policies for fostering innovation in England and Canada to contrast t…

The governance of fiscal policy in the United Kingdom and Canada
This article analyzes the governance of fiscal policy in the United Kingdom and Canada under the Blair Government and the Chrétien Government. It seeks to identify whether the capacity of the core executive to steer fiscal policy has been “hollowed out.” The conclusion drawn is that in both the United Kingdom and Canada, far from having been hollowed out, there has actually been a strengthening of the capacity of the Treasury and the Department o…
New Labour, New centralism
The Blair Government's commitment to both devolution and decentralisation would appear impeccable. New Labour's affirmed objective is 'to put in place an integrated programme of measures to decentralise power in the United Kingdom'. However, this article asserts that the Blair Government has thus far failed to deliver genuine decentralisation of political (as opposed to administrative) power to the regions of England beyond London. The combinatio…
