  • Association of Weight at Different Ages and All-Cause Mortality Among Older Adults in the US

Open Access•Kaitlyn M Berry, Sarah Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2022•Referencias: 4

Objective: Assess the association of BMI and BMI change with mortality. Methods: Using data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) on participants born mainly in 1939 ( n =4922), we investigated the associations between various measures of BMI across the life course (age 54 BMI; age 65 BMI; age 72 BMI; lifetime maximum BMI; BMI change between ages 54 and 65; BMI change between ages 65 and 72) and mortality. We also assessed whether these ass…

  • College Selectivity and Later-Life Memory Function

    Open Access•Sarah Garcia, Sara M Moorman•ARTICLE•Research on Aging•2021

Research has shown a consistent association between college completion and laterlife cognition. We extend this work by examining whether college selectivity—the achievement level required to gain admission to a college—is associated with memory functioning more than 50 years later. We analyze data from 10,317 participants in the 1957–2011 Wisconsin Longitudinal Study to examine the relationship between college selectivity and later-life memory. M…

  • Perceptual dissimilation of /l/ and (not) /n

Open Access•Nancy Hall, Bianca Godinez et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2020

We test Ohala’s (1993) hypothesis that phonological dissimilation can result from perceptual errors. Using a task in which American English speakers hear and orthographically transcribe nonce words, we test whether they are more likely to omit an acoustically present /l/ or /n/ when heard in a word where another token of the same sound is present. We find that this is the case for /l/ but not for /n/. These results mirror the actual prevalence of…

  • Racial Disparities in Covid-19 and Excess Mortality in Minnesota

    Open Access•Elizabeth Wrigley-Field, Sarah Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2020•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 5

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has produced vastly disproportionate deaths for communities of color in the United States. Minnesota seemingly stands out as an exception to this national pattern, with white Minnesotans accounting for 80 percent of the population and 82 percent of COVID-19 deaths. The authors examine confirmed COVID-19 mortality alongside deaths indirectly attributable to the pandemic-'excess mortality'-in Minneso…

  • The Power of Inclusion

    Open Access•Basia D Ellis, Roberto G Gonzales et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2019•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 35

Critical migration scholars argue that undocumented 1.5-generation immigrants occupy distinct forms of 'abject' statuses, as legally excluded yet physically included members of society. Implemented in June 2012, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program promised to alleviate the situation of many undocumented young persons in the United States by providing them with temporary work authorization, social security numbers, and protec…

  • School Context in Adolescence and Cognitive Functioning 50 Years Later

    Open Access•Sara M Moorman, Emily A Greenfield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2019•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 56

To advance understanding of how social inequalities from childhood might contribute to cognitive aging, we examined the extent to which school context in adolescence was associated with individuals' cognitive performance more than 50 years later. Using data from 3,012 participants in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS), we created an aggregate measure of school-level structural advantage, with indicators such as the proportion of teachers who …

  • Factors Influencing Low Prevalence of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Among US Hispanic/Latino Children

  • The Interactive Effects of Cerebral Perfusion and Depression on Cognitive Function in Older Adults With Heart Failure

Michael L Alosco, Mary Beth Spitznagel et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: Depression is common among persons with heart failure (HF) and has been linked to cognitive impairment in this population. The mechanisms of this relationship are unclear, and the current study examined whether cerebral perfusion moderates the association between depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment in patients with HF. METHODS: Persons with HF (n = 89; mean [standard deviation] age = 67.61 [11.78] years) completed neuropsychol…
