  • Lottery puzzles and Jesus' ‘Return’

    Open Access•Donald Smith•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2009

This paper is about a puzzle – I'll call it ‘the Return’ – that puts considerable pressure upon Christians to accept a very robust scepticism about the future. Those familiar with work on so-called ‘lottery puzzles’ will notice much similarity between those puzzles and the Return. However, there is an important difference that renders the Return an especially difficult problem for a Christian who believes that he has much knowledge about the futu…

  • Vague Singulars, Semantic Indecision, and the Metaphysics of Persons

    Open Access•Donald Smith, Donald P Smith•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2007•Citada por: 1

Composite materialism, as I will understand it, is the view that human persons are composite material objects. This paper develops and investigates an argument, The Vague Singulars Argument, for the falsity of composite materialism. We shall see that cogent or not, the Vague Singulars Argument has philosophically significant ramifications

  • Wholly Present? Defined

    Open Access•Thomas M Crisp, Donald Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2005•Citada por: 6

Three-dimensionalists, sometimes referred to as endurantists, think that objects persist through time by being “wholly present” at every time they exist. But what is it for something to be wholly present at a time? It is surprisingly difficult to say. the three-dimensionalist is free, of course, to take ‘is wholly present at’ as one of her theory's primitives, but this is problematic for at least one reason: some philosophers claim not to underst…

  • Aids and Self-Organization among Intravenous Drug Users

R Friedman, Samuel R Friedman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•1987

Gays and intravenous (i.v.) drug users are the two largest risk groups for AIDS. Gays, unlike drug users, have formed many organizations to deal with AIDS. Data are presented indicating that gay individuals have more risk-reducing behavioral changes than have i.v. drug users. It is also shown that i.v. drug users are more likely to protect themselves if their acquaintances do so. It is suggested that collective self-organization can lead to peer …

  • Recognition of Bituminous Coal Contaminants in Radiocarbon Samples

    Open Access•Kenneth B Tankersley, Cheryl Ann Munson et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1987•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 7

Bituminous coal, previously suspected as a contaminant in radiocarbon samples, has now been demonstrated to be a source of dating error in archaeological and geological samples. Standard laboratory procedures are inadequate to recognize or remove coal from samples, but techniques for identifying coal particles include paleo-botanical and reflectance analyses, and possibly accelerator dating

  • Shared Ministry

    Open Access•Donald Smith, Donald P Smith•ARTICLE•Theology Today•1979

“We have discovered that ‘internal ministries’ and ‘external ministries’ appear to be inextricably linked. Where a congregation or its members are actively involved in ministries outside the congregation, it seems that there are always significant ministries to one another taking place within the fellowship of the congregation. ... Our findings suggest that one reason the church has had such difficulty in developing the concept and the practice o…

Christianity approached the Scandinavian lands but tardily. By the time of Anskar's death in 865 there were churches at Birka in Sweden, at Hedeby in Schlesvig and at Ribe in south Jutland.... It was not until about 1150 that any effort was made to introduce Christianity to Finland.
