How far along the future path do individuals recognize the path for stepping on multiple footfall targets? A new evaluation method under virtual reality
Introduction The ability to visually recognize the path ahead during walking is essential for adjusting gait patterns in an anticipatory manner to mitigate perturbations induced by tripping. In this study, we aimed to develop a walking task within a virtual reality (VR) environment, termed the VR multi-target stepping (VR-MTS) task, as a method to evaluate the extent to which individuals can recognize the path ahead while continuously stepping on…
Participatory approaches for developing a practical handbook integrating health information for supporting individuals with mild cognitive impairment and their families
AIM: This study aimed to develop a patient-centred handbook that integrates information on lifestyle modifications and psychological support strategies for individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This article provides a comprehensive record of the development process. METHODS: We adopted a participatory research model for the methodology, which comprised five phases and involved an interdisciplinary team specializing in dementia and hea…
Self-Management Group Exercise Extends Healthy Life Expectancy in Frail Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Preventing frailty and its adverse health outcomes is crucial in countries with a large elderly population, such as Japan. Since the long-term care insurance (LTCI) system was launched, the number of certified older adults with LTCI service requirement has continued to increase. This is a serious problem, because the LTCI service requirement certification is equivalent to disability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a self-mana…
Energetic costs of bipedal and quadrupedal walking in Japanese macaques
We investigated the energetic costs of quadrupedal and bipedal walking in two Japanese macaques. The subjects were engaged in traditional bipedal performance for years, and are extremely adept bipeds. The experiment was conducted in an airtight chamber with a gas analyzer. The subjects walked quadrupedally and bipedally at fixed velocities ( 2 ) production. While walking bipedally, energetic expenditure increased by 30% relative to quadrupedalism…
