Attitudes Toward Marriage, Partner Availability, and Interracial Dating Among Black College Students From Historically Black and Predominantly White Institutions
This study examined attitudes toward marriage, perceptions of partner availability, and attitudes toward interracial dating among Black male and female college students at two historically Black colleges/universities (HBCUs) and one predominately White institution (PWI). Pregnancy-Associated Deaths in Virginia Due to Homicides, Suicides, and Accidental Overdoses Compared With Natural Causes
This research is a case study of 309 pregnancy-associated deaths that occurred in Virginia from 1999-2005. Pregnancy-associated deaths due to homicide, suicide, or accidental overdose were compared with natural deaths. Violent deaths accounted for almost 30% of the cases. Homicides accounted for 13% of all the deaths in the sample, larger than any single natural cause of death. Homicide was the leading manner of death for Black women and was 4.5 …

The research presented employed critical discourse analysis to examine advice columns on sex and women's sexual freedom as expressed in two popular women's magazines, Essence and Cosmopolitan, over a three-year period. Essence has a Black female audience, Cosmo a predominantly White female audience. After the Civil War, the Congregational church and Washington, D.C. clergy founded Howard University to train black teachers and preachers how to educate and uplift recently emancipated slaves. Since then it has consistently confronted the shameful legacies of slavery and racism. As the numbers of women in prison have increased, so have the number of older women behind bars. These older women present unique problems for institutions trying to meet their health care needs. We report findings from our national pilot study of federal and state prisons for women. Prisons report basic services for physical and mental health care, and most report having hospice services. Black and White College Students' Choices of Descriptors for Older Women and Older Women Relatives
Black and white students from two different educational institutions (N = 107) completed demographic information as well as a forty word instrument asking them to rate the words as to applicability regarding older women in general and a chosen older woman relative. Longitudinal data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Survey and its follow-up were used to analyze the effects of marriage and work roles and changes in these roles on the incidence of coronary heart conditions in a sample of 3,097 middle-aged women. Education, age, family income, race, and number of children were included as covariates. The data indicated that women who became unmarried, younger women, and better educated women were at …
Correlates of Two Measures of Fear of Success in Women
Fear of success was measured in 40 college women first with the usual projective technique and second with an objective fear of success scale. The two measures showed a low correlation of .37. The projective measure was not significantly correlated with self-concept, anxiety, the Mf scale of the MMPI, or with attitudes toward women.
