Effects of the Criminalization of HIV Transmission in Cuerrier on Men Reporting Unprotected Sex with Men
Silence, assent and HIV risk
Based on interviews with 34 men, almost all of whom have unprotected sex with men most or all of the time, this paper documents the interactional process, narrative elements and meaning construction in situations of 'bareback' sex. Narratives show the differentiated cultural capital circulating among distinct circuits of gay and bisexual men that define the taken-for-granted rules of conduct for sexual interactions and give rise to high-risk situ…
Risk construction in the reinfection discourses of HIV-positive men
Interviews with HIV-positive gay and bisexual men in Toronto show a widespread attentiveness to the question of HIV reinfection or super-infection as a concern in safer sex decision-making. Examination of HIV reinfection discourses shows how sero-positive men find themselves at the nexus of expert knowledge and responsibilizing trends in relying on, interpreting, and extending medical evidence in constructing risk for self and others. While not a…
Aids optimism, condom fatigue, or self‐esteem? Explaining unsafe sex among gay and bisexual men
This study examines leading explanations for unsafe sex in light of in-depth interviews with 102 high-risk gay and bisexual men in Toronto to see how well they engage with the social circumstances and reasoning processes of men in their sexual relationships. We argue that there is an inadequate fit between some of the leading explanations and the discursive accounts provided by high risk men themselves. Their accounts focus on unsafe sex occurrin…

Historical revisit
Robert Dudley Edwards’s Church and state in Tudor Ireland is an extremely durable, almost monolithic, work. Despite recent judgements that it is shot through with the confessional bias of its author, it has managed to retain an eminent place in the Irish historical canon since its publication in 1935. Two plausible reasons for this durability are readily identifiable. The first concerns Dudley Edwards’s role as a ‘founding father’ of ‘scientific’…
The Profession of Notary Public in Medieval Flanders
The Church of Ireland
One of the things which has united historians across the generations when writing about the Reformation in its Tudor Irish context is the conviction that the state was ultimately unsuccessful in securing the allegiance of the indigenous population to its religious dictates. Where this agreement has broken down, and continues to break down, is in the significance attached to the Tudor state’s failure, and in determining precisely when it became ap…
Family, marriage and moneychanging in medieval Bruges
The work of the late Raymond de Roover revealed the technical complexity of the Bruges financial world in general and that of Bruges moneychangers in particular. But de Roover overlooked the social underpinnings of this world, specifically how marriage and inheritance customs could affect business organization. By returning to financial documents left by two fourteenth-century Bruges moneychangers used by de Roover, and others unknown to him, thi…
Failure of corporation
The puzzling absence of guilds of notaries public in northern Europe has long taxed the explanatory powers of historians. Differences in social and economic conditions between the south and north seem insufficient explanations, particularly in fourteenth-century Bruges, a commercial center quite analogous to southern European cities. Using two Bruges notaries as case studies, it is clear that differences in the nature of notarial work were also i…

The measurement of skeletal maturity
A new approach to the measurement of skeletal maturity has been described. This was applied to the distal end of the femur in boys aged one month to four years. It is planned to extend this study to girls and to other ages and sites and to other bones in the knee area. The study began with the testing of reported indicators of skeletal maturity in respect of replicability, validity, discrimination and universality. As a result, seven qualitative …
