Improving Mission Assurance Assessments for Resilience of Military Installations
It is critical to improve the resilience of military installations and their complex infrastructure systems to strengthen response to the uncertainty and threat driven by the increasing frequency and severity of natural and human-made disasters. This research addresses a considerable gap in the existing Department of Defense (DOD) Mission Assurance Framework between the infrastructure assessment process and resilience considerations, and integrat…
Assessing Adherence to Asthma Medication and Inhaler Regimens
Poor adherence to recommended regimens is a substantial problem in the clinical management of adults with asthma and other chronic diseases. Research on adherence assessment is complicated by methodological difficulties including limitations associated with the use of self-report measures. In this study, psychometric techniques were used to analyze two self-report scales for assessing adherence to recommended medication and inhaler use regimens i…

Validity of the Allied Health Aptitude Test in a Respiratory Therapy Education Program
Scores on the Allied Health Aptitude Test and previous GPAs for 102 students were correlated with a dichotomous measure of their persistence and their GPAs in the Respiratory Therapy program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The multiple correlation for predicting grades was .62, and for predicting persistence was .47. These results are comparable to those obtained in other academic prediction studies and support the validity of this te…

Validity of Locus of Control and Self-Esteem Measures in a National Longitudinal Study
This study examined the relationships of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 measures of locus of control and self-esteem to differential goal attainment in the areas of education, work, marriage, and fertility. Little evidence was obtained for the hypotheses that internal control and positive self-esteem further differential goal attainment, or that differential goal attainment furthers internal control and positive …

Train Buffs
Ecological characteristics of U.S. states and cities were correlated with measures of the geographic distribution of train buffs. As would be expected, state and city population size is the strongest correlate of the absolute number of train buffs. When number relative to population is considered, train buffs are concentrated in affluent cities and in affluent, urban states with primarily white populations and containing the outer fringes of metr…
The Human Ecology of the American Educational Research Association
acterized by their patterns of activities (Bailey & Mulcahy, 1972; Duncan & Schnore, 1959; Hawley, 1950). It frequently has been applied to the analysis of the geographic distribution of the members of various professions (Marden, 1960; Reskin & Campbell, 1974; Richards, 1977; Richards & Gottfredson, 1978). These studies have emphasized the health professions, however, so this study extends them by studying the geographic distribution in the Unit…

Personality Type for Physicians' Assistants and Associates Based on Vocational Preference Inventory
Weighted profiles for the Vocational Preference Inventory were computed for 74 students in the Health Assistant and Health Associate programs of the Johns Hopkins University School of Health Services. The three letter summary code was ISA, which is the same as the code for physicians. These results suggest the personality type assigned to these groups is similar

Impact of a Replacement Birth Rate on U.S. Adult Value Structure
Consequences of a replacement birth rate would include changes in the population age distribution. This study combined estimates of these age distribution changes with estimates of the relationship between age and values to yield estimates of the impact of a replacement birth rate on value structure. Results suggest that virtually no changes in value structure should occur solely as a consequence of a replacement birth rate
A Fortran Program for Simulating Educational Growth With Varying School Impact
To facilitate empirical investigations of longitudinal methodology, a computer procedure was developed to generate artificial data in which true growth scores are known. This procedure simulates the results of the Educational Testing Service Growth Study that pertain to the relationships among scores on a test of academic potential and scores on a test of educational attainment administered on four occasions. Similarly, the procedure simulates th…
A Simulation Study of the Use of Change Measures to Compare Educational Programs
Artificial data were used to assess the correlation between several estimates of average student change in various schools and the “true” impact of those schools. Results indicate that all estimates involving pretest-posttest differences measure school impact with reasonable accuracy. It is important to measure change over the entire course of learning, however, and not just over the later stages of learning. The correlations between change score…
Predicting Performance in a Combined Undergraduate and Medical Education Program
This study investigated the prediction of success in the six-year combined undergraduate and medical education program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Students enter this program directly from high school, and at the end of six years receive their bachelors and medical degrees simultaneously. In addition to the usual measures of academic success, criteria for this study included measures of personal development, participation in cultur…
Impact on Admission to a School of Medicine of an Innovation in Selection Procedures
This paper reports the impact on admission to the University of Missouri-Kansas City's 6-yr. combined baccalaureate-doctor of medicine program of an innovation in selection procedures. In 1973 and 1974, the school's Council on Selection de-emphasized high school academic performance but continued to consider extensive biographical and interview data. Significant differences emerged in the correlations of various selection criteria with the Counci…
The Structured Interview
This study is a first step in evaluating the value of a structured interview in the selection of students for a six-year joint bachelor's-medical degree program. Specifically, the structured interview results were related to the admissions decision. The predictive utility of the interview will be explored in subsequent studies. 73 candidates were interviewed for 40 openings in the first year of the program and 132 candidates were interviewed for …

A Description of Medical College Environments
Behavior is typically conceived as determined by an interaction between individual characteristics and the characteristics of the environment. Consequently, in recent years researchers in higher education have devoted considerable attention to the description of college environments. Pace and Stern (1958) developed the College Characteristics Index (CCI), a true-false inventory which measures 30 features of the environmental press of the college,…

Cronbach (1955) has proposed that accuracy of person perception scores be divided into several components as follows: Total. Elevation, Differential Elevation, Stereotype Accuracy, and Differential Accuracy. In the present paper, hypothetical items are presented to illustrate the fact that the system used in assigning scores can artifactually reduce the Differential Elevation and Stereotype Accuracy components and in extreme cases cause them to d…
