The Concept of Laterite
Although originally defined as a mottled clay which hardened on exposure to air, the term laterite has been applied to such a diverse array of geomorphic features that it no longer has value as a precise descriptive term. The persistence of error in modern studies of laterite stems from early confusion over what laterite is and how it forms. Sedentary laterite is genetically distinct from detrital laterite. Rations came in one-man, four-man, and io-man day boxes, and tended to become monotonous. A large quantity of sugar was consumed, and salt and porridge both became important commodities. At Adrar Bous bread was baked in a biscuittin oven while theT45 kg of flour lasted. Towards the end of the expedition the diet of dried and tinned food was relieved by fresh vegetables becoming available at Iferouane
