A re‐conceptualization of the person and the internal‐external dichotomy present in theories that explain occupation
When using theories to describe occupations, it is important to be aware of changes in thinking from other fields that affect some of the base assumptions present in those theories. Yerxa (1993) raised the concern that consciousness is required for engagement in occupation. This ties the study of occupation to the study of consciousness. In the philosophy of mind there have been changes in the understanding of consciousness. Some of the advances …
A new look at factors influencing total quality management failure
By drawing on multi‐case data, there is some evidence to suggest that total quality management (TQM) effectiveness can be viewed as a direct function of the controlling mechanisms that senior managers created prior to TQM implementation. More importantly, control tools of TQM were not used by non‐managerial employees, with which they could reduce variability or achieve uniformity; rather, they were regarded as a weapon used by their managers agai…
Object or Person
The article examines the fundamental theory behind being a person rather than an object. In support of their argument they draw on Plato, Foucault and Descartes, as well as data gathered using an ethnographic approach in a village in Scotland.
The Controversialist
Goldwin Smith (1823-1910) was a celebrated, transatlantic writer on current events, politics, religion, history, and literature. While he made his academic mark teaching at Oxford, Cornell, and later as a resident guru at Toronto, his facile pen earned him a far greater reputation with general readers throughout the English-speaking world. Determined to rouse concern over issues that he deemed to be important to the advancement of humanity, Smith…

graduates also have been prepared as leaders in attaining equitable opportunities for all students. According to House and Martin (1998) an increasingly global society calls for better use of resources and demands closing the achievement gap between poor and minority children and their more advantaged peers. This new vision developed through the TSCI has focused on the need to increase academic achievement and has acknowl
Aerobic landfill test cells and their implications for sustainable waste disposal
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills world-wide are experiencing the consequences of conventional landfilling techniques, whereby anaerobic conditions are created within the landfill waste. Under anaerobic conditions, slow stabilization of the waste mass occurs, producing methane, (an explosive, 'greenhouse' gas) and toxic leachate over long periods of time. As a potential solution, it was demonstrated that the aerobic degradation of MSW within …
Why Were We Bombing Yugoslavia
Why were we bombing civilians, women and children, hospitals, bridges, roads, schools and factories in Yugoslavia? The popular conception repeated endlessly by American and British politicians, NATO representatives and by the western media is that it was a humanitarian measure to protect Albanian Kosovars from ethnic cleansing and civil rights abuses at the hands of Serbs in the Kosovo region of Yugoslavia. It may seem somewhat strange that bombi…
Landfill as a Future Waste Management Option in England
Municipal solid waste (MSW) management issues have moved to the fore of the public agenda, with levels of concern and activity by citizens and governments world-wide reaching unprecedented levels. New waste management techniques are being developed in response to this situation, but many are in their infancy and are not proving to be economic in England. Landfill remains the dominant waste management method employed by waste disposal authorities …

Functional Rights
That public ownership is a viable means to achieve the economic goals of a society has long been an article of faith among western socialists and social democrats. Yet the continuing obsession of a resurgent right with 'privatization', along with the recent demise of Stalinist economic regimes in eastern Europe, has thrown the question of the efficacy of public ownership into high relief. The democratic Left, responding to these and other pressur…
Canadian Political Economy
The Debt Crisis and Eastern Europe
The truly remarkable changes that have taken place in Poland and Hungary in the past year have prompted many western observers to trumpet the return of capitalism to eastern Europe. Many on the left have watched these changes with comparable interest but with considerable concern that "the God had failed," that the socialist alternative to the inequality, injustice, and inhumanity of capitalism had proven unable to maintain itself in competition …

The Enigma of 'Variations
In an article written for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Tovey defined variations as 'the term given in music to groups of progressively developed versions of a complete self-contained theme, retaining the form of that theme though not necessarily its melody'. According to this definition, Stravinsky's Variations apparently could not be called variations at all. No readily perceptible versions of a theme are to be found in the component sections o…
