  • The Structural Violence of Indigenous Suicide Prevention Policies in Canada

    Open Access•Bryce Anderson, G Aikenhead et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2021

Indigenous peoples in Canada suffer from very high suicide rates of which there are various state-created programmes and efforts to combat. However, the variety of these programmes may be limited in their conceptions of Indigenous suicide. I predicted that by analysing existing suicide prevention policies and frameworks, I would find that they systematically place Indigenous peoples in vulnerable positions through the enforcement of Western ideal…

  • Quantification and control of microbial pollution from agriculture

    Open Access•David Kay, J Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2008•Citada por: 3

  • Potential Magnetic Susceptibility and Fractional Conversion Studies of Archaeological Soils and Sediments

    Open Access•J Crowther•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2003•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 14

Potential magnetic susceptibility (χ MAX ) and, hence, fractional conversion (χ CONV ) are shown to be critical in interpreting low‐frequency mass‐specific magnetic susceptibility (χ LF ) data. Results presented from 29 sites in the UK and one in Hungary encompass six types of investigation: Quaternary sedimentary stratigraphies, archaeological contexts, surveys of old ground surfaces, topsoil surveys of lithic scatter sites, topsoil prospection …

  • Glandy Cross

Open Access•Trevor Kirk, George Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2000•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 20

Excavations at the Glandy Cross monumental complex during 1991 and 1992 formed part of an integrated programme of evaluation, rescue, and research by Dyfed Archaeological Trust (DAT). Enclosures, pit circles, standing stones, and cairns were excavated and their environs systematically surveyed. Radiocarbon dates show the monumental complex to have been constructed between c. 2190–1530 cal BC. However, the earliest activity at the site may date to…

  • Soil phosphate surveys

    Open Access•J Crowther•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•1997

Variations in phosphate concentrations with depth and the effects of variability in the capacity of soils to fix phosphate can cause spurious patterns in phosphate surveys. Using the results from three contrasted sites in Wales, this paper illustrates the nature and magnitude of the problems that can arise, and explores various means by which more meaningful results might be achieved. Attention focuses on the adoption of more effective sampling s…

  • Short-term, post-burial change in a humic rendzina soil, Overton Down Experimental Earthwork, Wiltshire, England

    Open Access•J Crowther, R I Macphail et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1996•Referencias: 3

The 1992 excavation of the Overton Down Experimental Earthwork provided a unique opportunity to study pedogenic change in a humic rendzina soil 32 years after burial beneath a chalk bank containing a central stack of turves. Investigations focused on soil structure, porosity, organic matter, plant remains, pH, carbonate, iron, and magnetic susceptibility. Standard methods of chemical analysis and micromorphological description were complemented b…

  • Magnetic susceptibility

    Open Access•J Crowther, P Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•1995

Two possible approaches to separating anthropogenic from natural (geological and pedogenic) causes of variations in magnetic susceptibility are examined, the first using χmax and fractional conversion data, and the second based on the relationship between topsoil and subsoil magnetic susceptibility. Results presented from three contrasted sites in the UK suggest that the first approach, used in conjunction with stepwise multiple regression analys…

  • The Excavation of Two Cairns and Associated Features at Carneddau, Carno, Powys, 1989–90

    Alex Gibson, Stephen Aldhouse-Green et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1993•Citada por: 5

The complete excavation of one and the partial excavation of a second bronze age structured cairn are described. The excavations provided important evidence for the construction sequence of the cairns and Welsh bronze age funerary practices. A series of radiocarbon dates was obtained for the collared urns associated with the cairns

  • Plas Gogerddan, Dyfed

    Kenneth Murphy, H N Savory et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1992•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 4

At Plas Gogerddan, evidence was discovered for human presence from the middle of the fourth millennium B.C. up to the present day. Numerous pits and post-holes were excavated around a standing stone; one of these pits was dated to the tenth-fifteenth centuries B. c. To the west of the standing stone, three ring-ditches were constructed and used in the first millennium B.C.; in association with these ring-ditches were three iron age crouched buria…
