Proclaiming Christ in Complexity
Interfaith relations may be perceived as a problem for Christian public theology. It is difficult for Christianity to proclaim its perspective on complex public issues while also being conscious of relationships with people of other faiths. Rather than perceiving this as a problem, this article explores it as an opportunity. It suggests a way of reading complex public issues that is rooted in a conversation between Christianity and other faiths. …

Reported Neighborhood Traffic and the Odds of Asthma/Asthma-Like Symptoms
Asthma in children poses a significant clinical and public health burden. We examined the association between reported neighborhood traffic (a proxy for traffic-related air pollution) and asthma among 855 multi-racial children aged 4-8 years old who participated in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort. We hypothesized that high neighborhood traffic density would be associated with the prevalence of asthma. Asthma/as…

Fire History of an Old-Growth Ponderosa Pine Stand in the Sheep Range, Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada, Usa
Southwestern ponderosa pine forests have experienced reduced fire frequency since Euro-American settlement generally because of successful fire suppression policies. We report here on the fire history of a ponderosa pine stand located in the Sheep Range, which is part of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, in the Mojave Desert. A total of 22 dominant, fire-scarred ponderosa pines were sampled by taking 29 partial cross-sections and 18 wood incre…
Preliminary insights into late prehistoric fish procurement strategies in the desert interior of southeastern Arabia
The exploitation of marine resources at Saruq al‐Hadid
Marine resources were an integral and consistent component of subsistence strategies employed in south‐eastern Arabia throughout late prehistory. Of particular interest is the movement of these resources from the coast to interior sites and the implications of this movement for transhumance and trade in the region during this period. Marine species were frequently identified in the faunal assemblage from the inland site of Saruq al‐Hadid, dating …
Dating Persistent Short-Term Human Activity in a Complex Depositional Environment
The archaeological site of Saruq al-Hadid, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, presents a long sequence of persistent temporary human occupation on the northern edge of the Rub’ al-Khali desert. The site is located in active dune fields, and evidence for human activity is stratified within a deep sequence of natural dune deposits that reflect complex taphonomic processes of deposition, erosion and reworking. This study presents the results of a program …
Saruq al-Hadid
In this paper, the authors use the site of Saruq al-Hadid – a 'persistent temporary place' located in the mobile dune fields of the north eastern edge of the Rub' al-Khali desert – as a lens to focus discussion on the variable nature of temporary sites and mobile adaptations within the archaeology of southeastern Arabia, the relationships between temporary sites and permanent settlements, and the evidence for collective events and gatherings from…
Archaeological and biometric perspectives on the development of chicken landraces in the Horn of Africa
Domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticusL., 1758) were integrated into agricultural systems in the Horn of Africa as early as the pre-Aksumite period (c. 2,500 years ago), after they were introduced from Asia through land and maritime trade and exchange. In this paper, we explore the development of chicken landraces in this region by examining continuity and change in chicken body size. Specifically, we compare the measurements of chicken bone…
The role of wild terrestrial animals in late prehistoric societies of south‐eastern Arabia
The nature of the relationship between humans and wild terrestrial animals has been little discussed in Bronze Age and Iron Age south‐eastern Arabia, largely due to a relative paucity of their remains in contemporary faunal assemblages. In this paper we present the results of analysis of animal bone recently excavated from Saruq al‐Hadid, a late prehistoric (2200–800 BC ) site located in the desert interior of the UAE . Wild terrestrial animals, …
Recent archaeological research at Saruq al‐Hadid, Dubai, UAE
In September 2014, the University of New England ( UNE ), Australia, began a three‐year programme of archaeological fieldwork and post‐excavation analyses focused on the site of Saruq al‐Hadid. In this paper, we present the initial results of our current field and laboratory research particularly related to site stratigraphy and formation processes, relative and absolute chronology, and the preliminary results of various programmes of post‐excava…
The invisible addiction
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The primary objective of the present study was to investigate which cell-phone activities are associated with cell-phone addiction. No research to date has studied the full-range of cell-phone activities, and their relationship to cell-phone addiction, across male and female cell-phone users. METHODS: College undergraduates (N = 164) participated in an online survey. Participants completed the questionnaire as part of their c…
Female Drug Offenders Reflect on their Experiences with a County Drug Court Program
This paper examines the experiences of a group of female drug offenders who successfully completed a county drug court program in northeast Pennsylvania. Using the constant comparative method, we analyzed interviews with these women for thematic patterns in order to provide an evaluation of this program based on participants' subjective perceptions of its strengths and weaknesses. While other drug court evaluations identify rewards for good behav…
Music, Musicians and Barroom Aggression
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between live bands and the music they play and aggression in barrooms catering to young, college-aged patrons. Twenty musicians representing 14 different cover bands playing in licensed drinking establishments throughout Northeast Pennsylvania were interviewed about their influence on the behaviors of bar patrons. Content analysis of completed interviews revealed several important findings…

Tea Production Economics in Sri Lanka
Results of applying micro-economic theory to data from a sample of Sri Lankan tea estates are used to derive economic information about tea production and motivate a discussion of policies for the industry. Empirical results include economies of scale, price elasticities, shadow prices and efficiency measures. Policy implications considered include industry organization, taxes and government pricing measures. Although related specifically to the …
