Enrichment and Frustration in Fieldwork
Expanding Biogeographic Horizons with Genetic Approaches
The last decade has seen tremendous increases in the variety and cost-efficiency of markers available to investigate genetic questions. Molecular markers have been used in a number of biogeographic studies; however, most of this work has been done by scholars in fields other than geography, despite the inherently spatial nature of questions many authors have addressed. This article calls for greater contribution by geographers to this body of wor…
Disturbance-Mediated Variation in Stand Structure between Varieties of Pinus clausa (Sand Pine)
Geographically mediated differences in exposure to disturbance agents that operate at different scales impose demographic contrasts between plant populations. We examined such effects on the stand-scale population structure of the two varieties of Pinus clausa (sand pine). Pinus clausa var. immuginata stands of the Florida panhandle exhibited reverse-J diameter and age structures, with ongoing stem recruitment and relatively high seedling and sap…
Vertebrate Feeding Guilds in California’s Sierra Nevada
In biogeography, as in other parts of physical geography, it has become conventional wisdom to assert that a change in the scale of analysis necessitates a change in explanatory factors. In this article, we present an empirical study at a regional scale and compare the results to earlier data analyzed at a subcontinental scale. We describe the spatial patterns of vertebrates, characterized by taxonomic Classes and feeding guilds, on the west slop…
Memories of Migration
Climatic Effects on Regeneration Trends for Two Columnar Cacti in the Northern Sonoran Desert
A traditional perception of desert vegetation is one of relatively slow change in a consistently harsh environment. More recent studies of population dynamics and paleoenvironmental reconstructions in arid environments have revealed the more dynamic nature of desert vegetation, in both a short-term and long-term perspective. This paper examines relationships of population dynamics to climatic fluctuation and anthropogenic factors in two columnar …

Bird Communities and Vegetation Structure in the United States
The composition of breeding-bird communities, as represented by the relative importance of foraging guilds, is different for vegetation of differing structures. We identified seven vegetation types and the character of the bird community associated with each. Desert shrub has birds with generalist feeding habits, grasslands have species that are primarily seed-eaters, and nondesert brush vegetation supports generalists and seed-eaters that feed o…
