  • Beyond Mictlan

Open Access•Julia Madajczak, Katarzyna Mikulska et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2026

This article attempts to clarify the nature and structure of the Nahua otherworlds. It follows in the footsteps of scholars who have demonstrated the inaccuracy of the Sahaguntine view of the Nahua destinations of the dead. The article begins by analyzing multiple Mesoamerican alphabetic and graphic accounts of journeys to the world beyond, and concludes that the Nahua divided their supernatural dimension into two parts, classified by the numbers…

  • The Deity as a Mosaic

    Open Access•Katarzyna Mikulska•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

In this article I argue that the graphic images of the gods in the divinatory codices are composed of signs of different semantic values which encode particular properties. All of them contribute to creating the identity of the god. However, these graphic elements are not only shared by different deities, but even differ between representations of the same god. Analyzing the graphic images of Xipe Totec, one of the best-studied deities and one of…

  • Deciphering Aztec Hieroglyphs

    Katarzyna Mikulska•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2022•Citada por: 4

Authored by a world expert in Nahuatl language and writing who is at the same time a renowned specialist in Zapotec and Sumerian scripts, this volume is the first handbook ever on the Aztec writing system. The goal of Deciphering Aztec Hieroglyphs is to unlock “the mysteries of Aztec writing for a wide readership for the first time” by “dissecting and describing” this writing system “in lavish detail”—an aim that Gordon Whittaker achieves in a we…

The aim of this article is to present the observations made during the work with the original codices Borgia (Borg. Mess. 1) and Vaticano B (Vat. Lat. 3773) in the Vatican Library in 2014. This codicological study, even if partial because it was realized only by means of direct observation, revels new data regarding the elaboration of the pre-Hispanic manuscripts. These data include the process of the elaboration of the skin (the material of the …
