At the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, Gilbert, earl of Gloucester, chivalrously charged alone into the Scottish ranks to preserve his honor. In contrast, Bartholomew Badlesmere, one of the earl's followers, unchivalrously failed to copy his lord's example. This article reassesses some of the evidence for Edward I’s armies, and suggests that the extent to which these armies anticipated the organisation and tactics used in the Hundred Years War should not be exaggerated. Cavalry numbers are hard to calculate, but historians may have underestimated the quantity of support staff. Special Operations in the Age of Chivalry, 1100-1550
There was no medieval SAS, and no concept of ‘special forces’ existed in the medieval period. Yet there were many actions that can, with no more than a degree of anachronism, be described as ‘special operations’.
