A Novel Adaptation of the Home Inventory for Elders
The context in which dependents, regardless of age, receive care affects their health. This study adapted the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) Inventory, originally designed for child development research, to assess the quality of stimulation and support available to elders in their habitual households in Sri Lanka. Whether the adapted domains correlated with indicators of health and well-being in ways consistent with th…
Japanese residential care quality and perceived competency in institutionalized adolescents
Although early institutionalization has been shown to have broad, detrimental effects on child developmental outcomes, there have been few attempts to systematic measure which aspects of the institution and caregiving environment associate with negative psychological outcomes. The current study uses a culturally and contextually modified early adolescent version of the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory (EA-HOME-JP) in …
Patterns of developmental change in infants' nighttime sleep awakenings from 6 through 36 months of age
Nighttime sleep awakenings and infant and family characteristics were measured longitudinally in more than 1,200 infants when the infants were 6, 15, 24, and 36 months old. By 6 months of age, the majority of children slept through the night, awakening their mothers only about once or twice per week. However, not all children followed this predominant developmental pattern. Using growth mixture modeling, we identified 2 distinct developmental pat…
Identifying Risk for Obesity in Early Childhood
OBJECTIVES. Our aim with this study was to assist clinicians by estimating the predictive value of earlier levels of BMI status on later risk of overweight and obesity during the middle childhood and early adolescent years. METHODS. We present growth data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, a longitudinal sample of 1042 healthy US children in 10 locations. Born in 1991…
The Relation of Kindergarten Classroom Environment to Teacher, Family, and School Characteristics and Child Outcomes
We observed 223 largely suburban or rural public school kindergarten classrooms in 3 states to describe classroom activities and child-teacher interactions involving 1 child per classroom. We also observed global classroom quality and assessed its relation to teacher, school, classroom, and family characteristics and target child out-comes. Classrooms were observed once for 3 hours starting at the beginning of the school day. Time samplings of ac…

The Early Childhood Home Inventory and Home-Short Form in Differing Racial/Ethnic Groups
In this article, we examine differences across three racial/ethnic groups in (a) the psychometric properties of the Early Childhood HOME Inventory and the HOME-Short Form and (b) the prediction of the two versions of the HOME Inventory to cognitive and behavioral outcomes among preschool children. Data are taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Supplement (NLSY-CS) and the Infant Health and Development Program (IHDP) sample. F…

A partial comparison of events, transaction, and roll‐call data for a developed‐developing nation subsystem
This paper examines the “information overlap” between WEIS events data and other measures of foreign policy behavior, including foreign aid allocations, diplomatic exchanges, trade, and UN voting agreements. The analysis suggests that events and non‐events variables tap different facets of states’ external conduct, but it also raises questions about the wisdom of relying on a single source of data to describe internation links
