Housing the Poor of Paris, 1850-1902
In second half of nineteenth century, when Paris became a modern urban center, problem of working-class housing emerged as a major issue. In this study Ann-Louise Shapiro examines reform activites of philanthropists, economist, municipal authorities, politicians, and public hygienists as they, together and separately, responded to quesitons of worker's foyer. In 1860, an anonymous Parisian pamphleteer compared himself to biblical Jeremiah who found in Babylon palaces but no shelter, a city which glittered but whose sons and daughters could not afford to live there.1 The effects of urban development begun by Napoleon III and his prefect, Baron Georges Haussmann, were already clearly visible. During Second Empire, Paris had been transformed from a medieval city into an imposing capital.2 Applying on an …
