A Latter-day Saint Apostle's Perception of the Southern Bazaar of Liverpool, October 1864
Daniel Hanmer Wells, a fifty-year-old Latter-day Saint apostle, arrived in Liverpool, England, in August 1864 to preside over the church's missionary efforts in Europe.1 During his almost two years stay, he corresponded with Brigham Young on Latter-day Saint theology, the progress of missionary work, health matters, and a myriad of other subjects. This article grapples with the problem of applying a nineteenth-century neologism to the relationships between clergy and laity within pre-Reformation Catholicism, essentially between circa 1100 and circa 1530. Broad approaches to the history of “anticlericalism” identify a major shift in its character at the Reformation, without being specific about its nature. BACKGROUND: This paper argues that the global health agenda tends to privilege short-term global interests at the expense of long-term capacity building within national and community health systems. This paper reports the identification of some fragments of an inscription now preserved in a window at All Saints, North Street, York, as the remnants of a statement of indulgences to reward prayers before a painted image in a window. As far as is known, this is the only surviving glass to demonstrate the proclamation of indulgences in medieval English church windows, although antiquarian evidence of at least one other is recorded
