Disparities in Health Outcomes and Access to Care Between Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Hispanic Adults
A large body of research has documented disparities in health and access to care experienced by sexual minorities and Hispanic populations in the United States. Very few population-based studies have examined health outcomes at the intersections of sexual orientation and Hispanic ethnicity- and large research gaps remain on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer/questioning (LGBQ+) Hispanic communities by specific Hispanic ethnicities an…
Association of State Conscientious Objection Laws and Sexual Minority Population Health
Introduction The legality of denying health services based on sexual orientation is actively being litigated in the United States. Currently, ten US states have passed conscientious objection laws, allowing for denial of health services based on sexual orientation. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between state conscientious objection laws and changes in health service use and health status among sexual minority adults.…
Inequities in Self-Reported Social Risk Factors by Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
In this cross-sectional study, sexual and gender minority adults were significantly more likely to report multiple SRFs. These findings suggest that policies and community-based systems to advance socioeconomic equity among sexual and gender minority adults are critical
Aging in isolation
We identified significant unmet need for social supports for IADL impairments, with highest unmet need among SM women. Comprehensive strategies such as LGBTQ + affirming assisted living and home and community-based services are needed to ensure equity in receipt of long-term supports and services for SM populations
Sexual identity, poverty, and utilization of government services
Previous literature has established that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people are at least as likely to be poor as heterosexual people, standing in contrast to myths of “gay affluence.” These findings have used datasets limited by either sample size or using partnership status to infer sexual orientation. Using U.S. data from the Household Pulse Survey, which allows us to identify large samples of individuals who self-identify as lesbian, gay,…
Health Insurance Coverage and Access to Care by Sexual Orientation During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Objectives. To compare health insurance coverage and access to care by sex and sexual minority status during the COVID-19 pandemic and assess whether lack of insurance hindered access to care by sexual minority status. Methods. Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (January 2021–February 2022), we examined differences by sex and sexual orientation among 158 722 adults aged 18 to 64 years living in 34 states. Outcomes were health i…
LGBTQ College student health and wellbeing at the onset of the pandemic
Our study adds novel findings to the large body of research demonstrating that LGBTQ college students experienced distress and elevated mental health needs early in the pandemic. Future research should examine the long-term consequences of the pandemic among LGBTQ and other minoritized college students. Public health policymakers, health care providers, and college and university officials should provide LGBTQ students affirming emotional support…

Sexual Behavior Change Among Gay and Bisexual Men During the First Covid-19 Pandemic Wave in the United States
Sexual minority men's behavior changes during the first wave may have reduced the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on their communities. Despite substantial changes in sexual behavior for most men in our sample during the initial first wave, we identify some concerns around the sustainability of certain behavioral changes over time and nondisclosure of COVID-19 symptoms to partners
Effects of Access to Legal Same‐Sex Marriage on Marriage and Health
We provide the first comprehensive evidence on the effects of access to legal same‐sex marriage (SSM) on marriage and adult health using the full rollout of marriage equality across the United States. Using data from the CDC BRFSS from 2000 to 2017, we relate changes in outcomes for individuals in same‐sex households (SSH) coincident with adoption of legal SSM in two‐way fixed effects models. A substantial share of these households includes gay a…

Disparities in Health and Disability Among Older Adults in Same-Sex Cohabiting Relationships

Health Care Disparities in the Post–Affordable Care Act Era
Disparities in health care have been targeted for elimination by federal agencies and professional organizations, including the American Public Health Association. Although the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides a valuable first step in reducing the disparities gap, progress is contingent upon whether opportunities in the ACA help or hinder populations at risk for impaired health and limited access to medical care

Comparison of Health and Health Risk Factors Between Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults and Heterosexual Adults in the United States
IMPORTANCE: Previous studies identified disparities in health and health risk factors among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, but prior investigations have been confined to samples not representative of the US adult population or have been limited in size or geographic scope. For the first time in its long history, the 2013 and 2014 National Health Interview Survey included a question on sexual orientation, providing health information on …
Residential High-Speed Internet Among Those Likely to Benefit From an Online Health Insurance Marketplace
Using data from the 2013 American Community Survey, we found that 24.3 million people (about 1 in 4) who were either eligible for Medicaid/Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or appeared likely to shop for Qualified Health Plan (QHP) lacked residential high-speed Internet. Specifically, 28.6% or 18.9 million people eligible for Medicaid/CHIP and 17.1% or 5.5 million people who appeared likely to shop for a QHP did not have high-speed Inter…
Barriers to Timely Medical Care for Older Adults by Disability Status and Household Composition
Living arrangements are often influenced by disability status, and co-resident caregivers may facilitate access to health care, especially for community-dwelling older adults with disabilities. Despite this, we know very little about how disability status and household composition work together to affect health services use. Using data from the National Health Interview Survey (2009–2011; n = 16,720), this study investigates (a) how access to med…
