The spread of the COVID-19 has generated a global rupture of routines and everyday life. The situation for informal settlements is exceptionally delicate due to their socio-economic conditions and the restrictions imposed by the quarantine to contain the virus. Armed conflict, land grabs and primitive accumulation in Colombia
Armed conflict is widely believed to disrupt agricultural production and 'reverse' development, but it may also involve the violent transformation of rural economies from subsistence to commercial agriculture. The case of Las Pavas, an estate in northern Colombia, provides further evidence that armed conflict created opportunities for violent land grabs and the expansion of commercial agriculture in Colombia. The involvement of non-state armed organisations (NSAOs) in illegal economies is often seen as a sign of the changing nature of contemporary armed conflicts. In particular, it is assumed that they no longer care about winning over the people's ‘hearts and minds’ and become violent and abusive towards the population. Urban Irregular Warfare and Violence Against Civilians
This article uses the analytical model put forward by Kalyvas in his Logic of Violence in Civil War to explore the violent transition experienced by Barrancabermeja from 1998 onwards, when the increasing insurgent presence was curbed by paramilitary groups and government forces. While the model sheds light on the causal mechanisms that led to violence against civilians, it fails to predict some of the observed outcomes; these anomalies are discus…
