Transitivity and Split Argument Coding In Yaqui
This article revisits transitivity and case marking of non-actor arguments in Yaqui. Yaqui has been defined as a transitive-prominent language because two-place predicates taking accusative arguments marked by -ta are extremely common, while predicates taking indirect/dative arguments marked by -u ‘to’ are uncommon. Typological studies have tended to take for granted the default interpretation for English and imposed ‘simultaneity’ as the basic meaning of when -clauses for all languages. This paper examines the syntactic structures that express purpose and causal adverbial relations in the Yaqui language. Yaqui displays considerable structural variation when expressing purpose and cause, and each of the linked units exhibits different degrees of syntactic and semantic integration with the main unit. Este artículo explora la naturaleza de las relaciones espaciales asociadas a construcciones de movimiento en la lengua yaqui (yutoazteca, México), con el fin de indagar la codificación formal de las nociones de lugar, fuente y meta, así como las posibles combinaciones entre los tipos de verbos y los tipos de locación.
