What Supports and Constrains the Implementation of Robust and Rapid Evaluation Within Local Government Public Health Systems
BACKGROUND: Since 2013, local government in England has held statutory responsibility for public health and concurrently faced financial pressures and limited research capacity. The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) established Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST) to bridge this gap, commissioning rapid, co-produced evaluations of complex interventions. MAIN BODY: Drawing on 5 years of PHIRST South Bank…
Not me, I’m in control!” a systematic meta-synthesis of othering amongst heavier drinkers
Othering is a discursive practice of constructing or drawing on an extreme or stereotyped problem ‘other’. Othering amongst drinking groups has been proposed as an important barrier to the resolution of alcohol problems via impeding problem recognition and increasing stigma. The aim of this review was to examine how heavier drinkers characterize a ‘problematic other’ in order to justify, normalize or protect their own ‘non-problematic’ drinking i…
Involving lived experience in regional efforts to address gambling-related harms
Integrating a range of LE perspectives in a public health approach to gambling harms reduction requires local access to involvement for people with LE via diverse routes that are free from stigma and present people with LE with options in how they can engage and be heard in decision-making, and how they operate in relation to industry influence. Involving LE in gambling harms reduction requires enabling people to develop the affective and critica…
A qualitative formative evaluation of a patient facing intervention to improve care transitions for older people moving from hospital to home
BACKGROUND: The Partners at Care Transitions (PACTs) intervention was developed to support older people's involvement in hospital to improve outcomes at home. A booklet, question card, record sheet, induction leaflet, and patient-friendly discharge letter support patients to be more involved in their health and wellbeing, medications, activities of daily living and post-discharge care. We aimed to assess intervention acceptability, identify imple…
Development of a ‘real-world’ logic model through testing the feasibility of a complex healthcare intervention
Logic models feature prominently in intervention research yet there is increasing debate about their ability to express how interventions work in the real-world. ‘Real-world’ logic models are a new proposition which express complex interventions in context. They are designed to help researchers strike a balance between context-sensitivity and scalability. This article explores the utility of real-world logic models in a trial involving a complex …
Using qualitative process evaluation in the development of a complex intervention to advance person-centred practice by pharmacists
In order to effectively evaluate complex interventions, there have been calls for the further integration of qualitative methods. Qualitative process studies of brief alcohol interventions and medicines reviews are notably lacking. This article provides a grounded example through the presentation of findings from an embedded qualitative process evaluation of a multi-site, pilot cluster RCT of a new intervention: the Medicines and Alcohol Consulta…

Steering, Knowledge and the Challenge of Governance Evaluation
Drawing from “robust political economy” (RPE) literature, we address evaluative questions concerning governance effectiveness in the face of complex, cross-cutting problems. Central to RPE is the challenge of coordination, with its fundamental epistemological dimension requiring close attention to stakeholder knowledge about policy impacts. This focus contrasts with process-orientated analysis predominant in political science and public administr…
Improving Patient Experience in Hospital Settings
This article presents a process evaluation of the implementation and refinement of a patient experience toolkit (PET) by action researchers in six hospital wards in the English National Health Service (NHS). An initial assumption that health care professionals (HCPs) would use PET to improve patient experience proved unrealistic due to staff and service pressures. However, the action researchers' facilitation of PET and their support during the i…
Feasibility of Interactive Voice Response Methods in Health Behavior Research With Immigrant Latinos
IVR technology makes diary studies with Latino samples feasible
Paul Et Al. Respond
We are gratified to note that Mathy does not have any substantive criticisms of our research. However, we would like to address 2 of Mathy’s points: first, that other population-based studies on this topic have been conducted, and second, that our analyses lacked cultural sensitivity. As our comment that prior research has been “primarily based on opportunistic samples” does not deny that some population-based research has occurred (which we cite…
Suicide Attempts Among Gay and Bisexual Men
Objectives. We examined lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts and psychosocial correlates in a large population-based sample of men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. A telephone probability sample of US urban MSM (n = 2881) were interviewed between November 1996 and February 1998. Results. Twenty-one percent had made a suicide plan; 12% had attempted suicide (almost half of those 12% were multiple attempters). Most who attempted suicide mad…
