Non‐Ingested Scapulae and Mandibles Accumulated in Nests by Bearded Vultures ( Gypaetus barbatus ) in Corsica
The bearded vulture ( Gypaetus barbatus ) is a scavenger and bone‐eating vulture that also transports bones to the nest to feed the nestlings. Bones found at nests are characterized by the accumulation of small‐ to medium‐sized ungulates, a high number of third and second phalanges and digestive corrosion marks on regurgitated bones. This actualistic study explores the taphonomic signatures of modern free‐ranging bearded vultures left on mandible…

Integrated approaches to understanding animal exploitation and dairying in the Central European Early Neolithic
Recent genetic studies point towards 6 th millennium BC central Europe as the core region for the emergence of the lactase persistence (LP) gene mutation -13,910 * T, making it important to understand the intensity of milk production and consumption among Linearbandkeramik (or LBK) farming groups. However, it is not known if milking was part of the LBK Neolithic “package” from the start, or if it displayed a discontinuous pattern in time and spac…
Τhe earthen architecture as a mirror of the Neolithic cultural organization
Recent developments in geoarchaeological studies using soil micromorphology have advanced our comprehension of construction techniques of earthen materials and contributed to our understanding the use of space in different sites diachronically. The Neolithic site of Klimonas, which is entirely constructed of earthen materials, offers the opportunity to apply a geoarchaeological approach. Through the identification of micromorphological indicators…

Back to Combe-Grèze (La Cresse, Aveyron)
The small shelter of Combe-Grèze, located in a dolina of the Causse Noir plateau about ten kilometres northeast of Millau in Southwestern France, was first excavated in the second half of the 20th century, and more recently has been subject to new investigations by the authors of this contribution. The site was repeatedly occupied during the Holocene and has been widely referred to in neolithisation scenarios regarding the Mediterranean hinterlan…

A Species Specific Investigation Into Sheep and Goat Husbandry During the Early European Neolithic
Archaeozoological assemblages are important sources of information on past management strategies, which are influenced by cultural practices as well as the physical geography and climate. Sheep, goat and cattle arrived in Europe with early Neolithic migrants. Their distribution is believed to have been mainly influenced by the geography of European regions although individual species may have held symbolic importance for specific Neolithic cultur…

Ce dispositif est constitué d’une citerne creusée dans le rocher et partiellement construite, reliée, par un passage voûté, à un puits d’accès servant également pour puiser. Ce réservoir, d’une capacité de 30 m 3env…
Regional asynchronicity in dairy production and processing in early farming communities of the northern Mediterranean
Significance This unique research combines the analyses of lipid residues in pottery vessels with slaughter profiles for domesticated ruminants to provide compelling evidence for diverse subsistence strategies in the northern Mediterranean basin during the Neolithic. Our findings show that the exploitation and processing of milk varied across the region, although most communities began to exploit milk as soon as domesticates were introduced betwe…
Genomic and archaeological evidence suggest a dual origin of domestic dogs
A dogged investigation of domestication The history of how wolves became our pampered pooches of today has remained controversial. Frantz et al. describe high-coverage sequencing of the genome of an Irish dog from the Bronze Age as well as ancient dog mitochondrial DNA sequences. Comparing ancient dogs to a modern worldwide panel of dogs shows an old, deep split between East Asian and Western Eurasian dogs. Thus, dogs were domesticated from two s…

The Early Process of Mammal Domestication in the Near East
Recent archaeological investigations on Cyprus have unveiled unsuspected Late Glacial and Early Holocene (twelfth-tenth millennia cal BP) pieces of the island's human history. Based on a review of the archaeological data and of the final results of the archaeozoological analyses of Sector 1 of the prepottery site at Shillourokambos, this paper examines how Cyprus improves our understanding of the process of mammal domestication in the Near East. …

Early domestication and farming
This paper aims to identify a series of conceptual, strategic and technological challenges facing archaeozoology (and archaeobotany) in order to better understand when, where, how and why plant and animal domestication and farming developed during the last 12 000 years. Situated at the interface of human societies and their environment, this reflection is based on examples, some of them unpublished, and on many references to animal domestication …

First Introduction and Early Exploitation of the Persian Fallow Deer on Cyprus (8000-6000 cal.bc)
The Persian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica) is currently a threatened species. However, it played an important role in many Late Glacial and Early Holocene human societies in the Near and Middle East. This is especially true of the island of Cyprus, where it was introduced at the beginning of the Neolithic and held a predominant place in human subsistence throughout Cypriot prehistory until the Bronze Age. The earliest levels of the extensiv…
New insights into the invasive process of the eastern house mouse ( Mus musculus musculus )
The house mouse invasion of the European continent has crucial implications for our understanding of the synanthropization process of European small mammals during the Holocene. Mice remains collected from a Chalcolithic burnt house in southern Romania, provided a unique opportunity to document which of the two house mouse subspecies was the commensal taxa of the late Neolithic Romania and question the factors of its invasive process. To obtain t…

Préhistoire du Cap Corse
The fauna! assemblage of Pietracorbara is one of the richest in Corsica (5 729 remains of Invertebrates and 3 507 of Vertebrates). During the Late Preneolithic, Prolagus was the main source of animal food. Some observations suggest that this small Lagomorph was dressed for meat storage on the site. Shellfish make a very secondary contribution. There were no domestic animals. During the Late Early Neolithic, Sheep, Goat and Pig, which were probabl…
