The aim of this qualitative case study was to explore multicultural education for ‘newcomers’ in Israel and in South Korea. This article examines the participation of women in academic conferences in Israel, a country in which women are under-represented in academia vertically and horizontally. Data were retrieved from announcements of academic conferences in Israel, for one academic year, covering 56 conferences that attracted 997 participations. Under representation of women in the hard sciences has led to research on the gender gap in mathematics achievement. Data show that women are almost equally represented in mathematics but are underrepresented in engineering. Thus the assumption is that mathematics is not the only factor that influences women's choice of engineering.
