School Nurses
Menstrual equity has emerged as an important public health issue, with a growing political coalition advocating improved access to menstrual products. In the September 2024 issue of AJPH, we described and analyzed the history of the role of school nurses in the US education system in relation to menstruation and its intersection with population health.1 In recognition of School Nurse Day and Menstrual Hygiene Day—both of which took place in the m…

The History of US Menstrual Health, School Nurses, and the Future of Menstrual Health Equity
In the United States, adolescents suffer from inadequate menstrual health, meaning that adolescents are unprepared for menarche, lack the practical resources they need to comfortably and confidently manage menstruation, and receive inadequate health education and care for menstrual pain and disorders. In this article, we provide a historical analysis of the role of school nurses in addressing menstruation from the early 20th century up to the pre…

Perezhivanie in Action
Analyzing a teacher’s perezhivanie shows how she both cognitively and emotionally experiences dramatic events and the mediation provided in response to such events, uncovering her professional development. This paper’s objective is threefold: (i) to illustrate how a novice English teacher’s perezhivanie refracts the contradictions she faces when her practice is inquired into by a more experienced peer; (ii) to analyze the quality and character of…
Challenges Facing Public Health Nursing Faculty in the United States
We present an analysis of challenges facing public health nursing faculty members (PHNF) in the United States and their broader societal implications. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, making them untenable. Current academic structures—influenced by the broader sociopolitical climate—are problematic for PHNF: they disincentivize PHNF from researching social determinants of health and public health systems, teaching systems-l…

Recurrent restorying through language teacher narrative inquiry
Informing and transforming language teacher education pedagogy
Given emerging trends in where, why, how, and to what end English language teachers are being prepared, we argue that greater attention to the design, enactment, and consequences of language teacher education (LTE) pedagogy is critical in order to meet the needs of current and future English language teachers in an increasingly diverse, mobile, unequal, and globalized world. Through our experiences and conviction as researchers and teacher educat…

Cognitive/emotional dissonance as growth points in learning to teach
While teaching has long been considered an emotional practice with teachers’ daily practices recognized as being permeated with emotional meanings and influences, as teacher educators we are often perplexed by how best to respond to novice teachers’ expressions of emotion. In this study, we document the practices that characterize our work as teacher educators in assisting novice teachers in the processes of learning-to-teach. Specifically, we ex…
The Transformative Power of Narrative in Second Language Teacher Education
Within the field of second language teacher education (SLTE), narrative has largely functioned as a vehicle for teacher inquiry, based on the assumption that such inquiry will ultimately bring about productive change in teachers and their teaching practices. Less attention has been paid to documenting what this change looks like or how engagement in narrative activities fosters teacher professional development. From a Vygotskian sociocultural the…
Second Language Teacher Education

Essential reading for all who wish to understand this perspective.' – David Nunan, University of Hong Kong '...Significant and timely. Johnson is masterful at writing in an engaging, transparent prose about complex concepts. It’s a rare scholar who can write prose like this. Throughout my reading I wanted to en…
The Sociocultural Turn and Its Challenges for Second Language Teacher Education
Although the overall mission of second language (L2) teacher education has remained relatively constant, that is, to prepare L2 teachers to do the work of this profession, the field's understanding of that work-of who teaches English, who learns English and why, of the sociopolitical and socioeconomic contexts in which English is taught, and of the varieties of English that are being taught and used around the world-has changed dramatically over …
The Toefl Trump Card
Much of the research on the effects of tests on foreign and second-language classrooms has examined the impact or washback effect that commercial/institutional language tests, such as the TOEFL, have on teachers' instructional practices (Hughes, 1998; Wall & Alderson, 1993). Using a case study methodology, this study uncovered the ways in which the classroom practices of one teacher and his students interact with their perceptions of the validity…
Narrative inquiry as a mediational space
In the practice of teacher education, most would agree that critical reflection in and on the process of learning to teach and the activities of teaching play a central role in teachers' professional development. Using Vygotskian sociocultural theory, we examine how narrative inquiry functions as a culturally developed tool that mediates teachers' professional development. We analyzed narratives written by three teachers of English as a second/fo…

Peer Review Negotiations
The purpose of this study is to describe the negotiations that occur during ESL students' peer reviews and the ways these negotiations shape students' revision activities. Twelve advanced ESL learners enrolled in a writing course participated in peer reviews. Audiotaped transcripts of the peer reviews and the students' first and revised drafts were analyzed, and postinterviews were conducted. During these peer reviews, students asked questions, o…
