    THIS PAPER PRESENTS results obtained at Oxford for over 100 medieval items of oak from areas in southern Britain and Flanders. They comprise excavated material, the bindings of manuscripts, furniture, paintings on panel, and standing buildings. Advances derived from analysis of the growth of oak in relation to species, ecology, and climatic swings have enabled 80% of the items to be dated
