A special find assemblage from the Neolithic of the Tisza region and its latest archaeological and archaeometric analysis
The settlement of Tiszaigar lies some 10 km south of Tiszafüred in the northern Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. A site known as Tiszaigar-Homokbánya extends over a roughly 250 × 150 m large area about 500 m south of the village, to the north of the entrance to the Arboretum, on the high bluff overlooking the floodplain and a former curved channel of the Tisza to the west. A large, abandoned quarry pit with a diameter of 100 m, whose depth rea…
The last 40,000 years of a floodplain area (Tisza, Hungary) comparative case study of 14C and OSL methods
To investigate the environmental history of the Tisza River (Hungary), we applied 14 C and OSL dating methods for five parallel, neighboring cores from the flood plain area (Jászság Basin). Four major sedimentary layers were identified: meadow soil on the top (S1); silty-clay (S2); clayey-silt (S3) section; and fine sand (S4). 14 C and OSL data were integrated into a synthetic age-depth model using the BACON software package. Formation of the S1 …
Aeolian dynamics at the northern edge of Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, Vojvodina, Serbia, at the time of the last deglaciation
The Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, which is one of the largest areas of аeolian sand in Europe, is located near the Iron Gate, which marks the crossing of the Danube River through the biggest gorge of this river. Here, Danubian alluvium has served as the sand source for the Banat Sand Sea, which was formed primarily through southeasterly (Košava) winds. Utilizing a multi-proxy approach, the objective of this study is to gain a better understanding o…
Wetland landscapes in the Southern Maya Lowlands (Naachtun, Guatemala) from the ancient agroecosystems to the tropical biosphere reserve
In the Biosphere Reserve of the Maya Lowlands, the large‐scale characterisation of the current wetlands ecology and the exploitation and management of their natural resources by the ancient Maya is severely constrained by the forest. This paper presents an integrated geomatic, geoarchaeological and ecological approach, developed to overcome this obstacle in the microregion of the Naachtun Maya city. It is based on the analysis of LiDAR, and field…
Local Differentiation in the Loess Deposition as a Function of Dust Source
Typical patterns of the Late Pleistocene loess–paleosol units are preserved in the Novo Orahovo brickyard, Northern Serbia. Presented preliminary luminescence chronology supports the chronostratigraphic interpretations of global isotopic marine climate reconstructions. Magnetic susceptibility and sedimentological evidence exhibit general similarities with the marine oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. These records provide new insights into the dust acc…
The Role of Past Climatic Variability in Fluvial Terrace Formation, a Case Study from River Mureş (Maros), Romania
Fluvial terrace formation is a complex process governed by the interplay of climatic and tectonic forcings. From a climatic perspective, an incision is usually related to climatic transitions, while valley aggradation is attributed to glacial periods. We have reconstructed the formation of Late Pleistocene fluvial terraces along the middle, mountainous section of a temperate zone river (Mureş/Maros) in order to identify the roles of different cli…
Late Pleistocene and Holocene aeolian activity in the Deliblato Sands, Serbia
The Deliblato Sands is among the largest uniform dune fields of Europe, with a very pronounced topography reflecting extensive past aeolian events. Although lacking numerical age data, previous researchers have hypothesized various periods of dune formation. Our research goals were to map the main morphological units of the Deliblato Sands, and to provide the first optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages for the major dune types. Mapping was…
Soil Organic Carbon Dating of Paleosoils of Alluvial Fans in a Blown Sand Area (Nyírség, Hungary)
The most widely used dating techniques in quaternary research are the radiocarbon ( 14 C) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating methods. In some environments, the investigated sediments do not contain enough material for 14 C dating. In these cases, 14 C dating of bulk sediment may be used as a last resort. The major aim of the present study was to determine the reliability and limitations of the different fractions of the soil organ…
Dating of alluvial sediments from borehole at the lower course of the Sava river and indications of the connection between their genesis and climate changes in the Pleistocene
Material analysis and TL dating of a Renaissance glazed terracotta Madonna statue kept in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest
Assessing Late Pleistocene and Holocene phases of aeolian activity on the Nyírség alluvial fan, Hungary
The evolution of the Great Hungarian Plain fluvial system – Fluvial processes in a subsiding area from the beginning of the Weichselian
Holocene landscape dynamics at the tell Arslantepe, Malatya, Turkey – Soil erosion, buried soils and settlement layers, slope and river activity in a middle Euphrates catchment
Alluvial and colluvial sequences were studied around the prehistoric tell Arslantepe in 11 exposures and additional auger cores. The chronology is based on 11 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages, four radiocarbon ages, and the embedded artifacts. Sediments contained wood charcoals, providing information on former vegetation. Fluvial activity is documented during Late Glacial times (15.4 ± 2.5, 12.8 ± 3.1 kyr) and frequently after Roman t…
An Enigmatic Funnel Find of the Somogyvár-Vinkovci Culture from Balatonőszöd-Temetői dűlő in Transdanubia, Hungary
A small section of an Early Bronze Age settlement made up of pits was uncovered at the prehistoric, multi-period site of Balatonszd-Temeti dl. In addition to ceramics of the Somogyvr-Vinkovci culture, the finds from Pit 2563 included an enigmatic artefact of baked clay. Despite the fact that analogous archaeological finds and various archaeometric analyses have provided several clues for a conclusive determination of its function, comparable find…
Holocene aeolian sand mobilization, vegetation history and human impact on the stabilized sand dune area of the southern Nyírség, Hungary
Almost 20% of the territory of Hungary is covered by stabilized dunes formed during the Pleistocene. With the climate amelioration during the early Holocene the aeolian activity ceased. However, various environmental and anthropogenic factors could have reactivated the aeolian processes. Today, there is an increasing climatic stress on the dune fields of the Carpathian Basin, which is coupled with inadequate land use. It is therefore necessary to…
Investigation of Holocene blown-sand movement based on archaeological findings and OSL dating, Danube-Tisza Interfluve, Hungary
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The largest blown-sand area of Hungary is located on the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Here the most significant aeolian activity took place in the Pleistocene, however the aeolian rework of the forms occurred also in the Holocene and even during historical times. The aims of the research were: (1) to map the geomorphology of the study area at the eastern border of the interfluve (2) …
