  • Past malaria, thalassemia and woman fertility in southern Italy

Open Access•P Astolfi, Antonella Lisa et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1999

The role of natural selection in maintaining the thalassemia polymorphism is examined in a southern Italy district, in the past affected by malaria endemia. The Haldane's hypothesis that the thalassemia heterozygotes enjoy more protection than the normal homozygotes against the risk of malaria infection, seems to be confirmed by this indirect study at population level. The higher number of children born of the women who lived in the highly endemi…

  • Fertility and malaria in Sardinia

Open Access•G Zei, Zei G et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

Using data from the 1961 Italian census, the study of fertility in Sardinia when malaria was endemic shows differential fertility between women living in areas with differing degrees of malaria. Cultural factors measured by women's level of education are negatively correlated with fertility, just as the 'urban' character of the area in which the women lived has a lowering effect on the fertility rate. The hypothesis of differential mortality acco…

  • Variation of the human secondary sex ratio and lethal recessive X-linked mutations

    Open Access•Paola Astolfi, G Zei•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1987

Sex ratio at birth was studied in relation to grandparental age, to enquire into the effect of the accumulation of X-linked recessive lethal mutations. From the data of the tenth census of the Italian population two samples of women having a live-born only child were examined: the first from some provinces of northern and central Italy, the second from the island of Sardinia. Besides maternal grandfather's and grandmother's ages, the mother's age…

  • Correlation between father's age and husband's age

Open Access•G Zei, Zei G et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1981

Analysis of the data from the tenth Italian census shows that women born to older fathers tend to marry older men. The correlations between the ages of the father and the husband in various situations were always found to be positive and significant when the age of the woman and her educational level were held constant. Correlation coefficients are higher in rural and economically less developed areas. Behavioural ‘imprinting’ is suggested as a p…

  • Consanguinity in Spain, 1911–1943

    J Pinto-Cisternas, J Pinto‐Cisternas et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1979•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 19

From data on consanguineous marriages in Spain for 1911 to 1943 for the whole country and for four macro regions, the behavior and relationship of consanguinity and demographic variables, such as density, birth rate, death rate, and marriage rate, are demonstrated and discussed. Differences among macro regions for all the variables analyzed and a constant inverse and significant relationship between consanguinity level and density have been found…
