An Overview of Physical Risks in the Mt. Everest Region
In April and May 2019, as part of National Geographic and Rolex's Perpetual Planet Everest Expedition, an interdisciplinary scientific effort conducted a suite of research on the mountain and recognized many changing dynamics, including emergent risks resulting from natural and anthropogenic changes to the biological system. In this Primer, the diverse research teams highlight risks to ecosystem and human health, geologic hazards, and changing cl…

Transitions of Youth in Mental Health Residential Care to Less Restrictive Settings
Changes in youth's behavioral/psychosocial functioning has been found to play an important role in the transitions from mental health residential care to less restrictive settings, and this functioning differs significantly by gender. However, there has been little attention paid to the roles played by psychosocial strength and gender in transitions out of residential care. The current study examined gender differences in the role of strengths in…
Why should child welfare pay more attention to emotional maltreatment
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Child Health in Early Adolescence
IMPORTANCE: Child maltreatment and other adverse childhood experiences, especially when recent and ongoing, affect adolescent health. Efforts to intervene and prevent adverse childhood exposures should begin early in life but continue throughout childhood and adolescence. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between previous adverse childhood experiences and somatic concerns and health problems in early adolescence, as well as the role of the …
Influence of caregiver network support and caregiver psychopathology on child mental health need and service use in the LONGSCAN study
Links between traumatic experiences and expectations about the future in high risk youth
The current analyses examined the role of past traumatic experiences in predicting expectations about social, academic, and occupational outcomes. These analyses were conducted in a sample of 843 youth, each 14 years old, who were participants in the Longitudinal Studies on Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). The analyses took into account socioeconomic indicators. Three classes of expectations emerged from factor analyses: Academic/Employment Su…

The impact of early mental health services on the trajectory of externalizing behavioral problems in a sample of high-risk pre-adolescent children
Children's self-reports about violence exposure
Children's exposure to violence is often found to be an important predictor of child outcomes. The measures most frequently used to assess it have not been systematically examined, and there is little consensus about how to use these measures. This study examined a version of the Things I Have Seen and Heard Scale in a sample of 784 children who completed the scale at both age 6 and 8. There was only modest support for the use of the scale as a s…
Understanding Disparities in Use of Mental Health Services Among Families Involved With Child Welfare
Libby and colleagues1 recently wrote about predictors of caregivers’ receiving services for mental health, emotional, or substance use problems. Their key finding was that American Indian caregivers are less likely than Hispanic caregivers to receive such services. This research is important for at least 2 reasons. First, there has been a dearth of research on disparities experienced by American Indian families in the child welfare system; most r…

What Can Suicide Researchers Learn From African Americans
Knox and colleagues1 recently issued a timely call for public health researchers to take a more complex approach to understanding and preventing suicide. As they note, there has been a dearth of intervention and prevention research, and many important methodological limitations. An important point made by Knox et al. is that “there is substantial worldwide variation in population patterns of suicide, violence, and depression. . . . A comprehensiv…
