Secularization and Religious Dealignment in Sweden
This article investigates secularization and religious dealignment in Sweden by analyzing changes in religious service attendance and the relationship between such attendance and party preferences from the late 1980s to the early 2020s. It addresses three research questions
The decline of Western European social democracy
Social democratic parties are crumbling at the polls. Surprisingly, however, the causes of this demise remain largely unexplored. This article contributes to filling this gap in the research by studying the long-term impact of welfare state generosity on the vote share of social democratic parties in 16 Western European democracies. If the welfare state indeed was a key factor behind social democratic growth in the past, we ask whether the recent…

Does the allocation of public funding for parties support the assumptions of cartel party theory about a change in the internal balance of power within Swedish parties? By answering this question, the study tests some of Katz and Mair’s theory about changing party financing that are linked to the changed balance of power within cartel parties. Using data on public party subsidiaries 1966–2011 in Sweden, the result supports these assumptions made …

Religious Change over the Generations in an Extremely Secular Society
The main argument of this paper is that religious change caused by modifying supply in the religious market takes time due to intergenerational value change. Unlike previous research, this study suggests that not only do religious agents on the supply side need time to adjust, but that the time lag is probably even greater among individuals on the demand side of the religious market. Using time series data, the study demonstrates that, despite sh…

Bloc Identification in Multi-Party Systems
It is argued that although the importance of party identification and social cleavages is declining, the bipolarity of the Swedish party system is sustained by voters' identification with political blocs rather than with parties. Using data from the Swedish election of 2010, the article shows that voters' bloc identification structures their voting behaviour and stabilises the party system. Four hypotheses are tested and supported. H1: Declining …
Religion and the environmental opinion in 22 countries
The objective is to test if religiosity affects environmental opinion in Europe. Using data from European Social Survey (ESS) 2002/2003, the study answers three questions. At the societal level: Is public opinion about the environment different in political systems with different Christian traditions? Is environmental concern less or higher in the public opinion depending on the degree of secularization in the political systems? At the individual…

Sweden
The participation ideal has affected Swedish politics in many ways and at first seems to contradict the notion of a professional political class. Yet, this has never been true for the national level and is less and less true for the local and regional level, the latter two often being a training ground for higher positions but also a career stage in their own right. It is unclear if a political class has already been established in Sweden – profe…
Religiosity and Swedish Opinion on the European Union
This article examines whether religiosity affects Swedish opinion on the European Union (EU) using survey data from 1998 conducted by the SOM Institute, Göteborg University. The findings support the notion that religiosity affects Swedish EU opinion. Members of the free churches (nonconformist Protestants) tend to oppose Swedish EU membership, whereas no such tendency is visible among active members of the Evangelical‐Lutheran Church of Sweden (t…
