Young women's health behaviours in context
The Bukhali trial is being implemented with young women (18–28 years) in Soweto, South Africa. A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted to explore Bukhali trial participants' perceptions of health and their health behaviours over time and in the context of their life circumstances. This article reports an interpretation of interview data from a sub-sample of 11 of 35 participants who participated in four interviews conducted over 12 months.…
Misaligned or misheard? Physical activity and healthy eating messaging to ethnic minority communities during the Covid-19 pandemic
This mixed-methods study identified physical activity (PA) and healthy eating messages produced during the COVID-19 pandemic and explored how they were received by UK ethnic minority communities. A scoping review of research and grey literature identified categories of PA and healthy eating messaging targeted at ethnic minorities. Individual and group interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using inductive thematic ana…
Behaviour change interventions improve maternal and child nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa
Evidence that nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions can improve maternal and child nutrition status in sub-Saharan Africa is inconclusive. Using behaviour change theory and techniques in intervention design may increase effectiveness and make outcomes more predictable. This systematic review aimed to determine whether interventions that included behaviour change functions were effective. Six databases were searched systematical…
What values drive communities’ nutrition priorities in a resource constrained urban area in South Africa
Our study demonstrates how public engagement can facilitate the incorporation of community values and programmatic preferences into nutrition priority setting, enabling a responsive approach to local community needs, especially in resource constrained contexts. Findings could guide policy makers to facilitate more appropriate decisions and to improve nutrition in the first 1000 days of life

Eleven nutrition interventions were identified through policy reviews, interaction with different s…
Young people’s experiences of Covid-19 messaging at the start of the UK lockdown
Young people want to be listened to and feel they have a part to play in responding to a national crisis such as the COVID-19 epidemic. To reduce the likelihood of disenfranchising the next generation, Government and the media should focus on developing messaging that reflects young people's values and concerns and to provide opportunities for young people to become involved in responses to future crises
Recent UK retirees’ views about the work-related factors which influenced their decision to retire
Recent retirees explained that their decision to retire was multi-factorial but work-related factors contributed importantly. Potentially, employers could: review workers' perceptions about their work; their capacity in relation to job demands; increase flexibility; and facilitate a supportive work community to encourage longer working lives
How do we engage people in testing for Covid-19? A rapid qualitative evaluation of a testing programme in schools, GP surgeries and a university
Participants' and stakeholders' motivations, challenges and concerns need to be understood and these insights used to modify the programme in a continuous, real-time process to ensure and sustain engagement with testing over the extended period necessary. Community leaders and stakeholder organisations should be involved throughout programme development and implementation to optimise engagement
Investigating the normalization and normative views of gestational weight gain
Objectives Gestational weight gain (GWG) is increasingly monitored in the United States and Canada. While promoting healthy GWG offers benefits, there may be costs with over‐surveillance. We aimed to explore these costs/benefits. Methods Quantitative data from 350 pregnant survey respondents and qualitative focus group data from 43 pregnant/post‐partum and care‐provider participants were collected in the Mothers to Babies (M2B) study in Hamilton,…
The roles of men and women in maternal and child nutrition in urban South Africa
Industrialization and urbanization processes have challenged deeply held traditional gender norms and facilitated the emergence of modern ideologies in South Africa. This paper seeks to explore the gendered roles of family members on maternal and child nutrition and investigate indications of perceived change in related practices. A qualitative secondary analysis was conducted of data from nine focus group discussions (FGDs) held with men (n = 3)…

Wow! They really like celeriac! Kindergarten teachers' experiences of an intervention to increase 1-year-olds’ acceptance of vegetables
Exposure to varied foods in early life is important for short- and long-term health and development. Strategically introducing toddlers to new vegetables is not a common practice in Norwegian kindergartens. Therefore, we developed, conducted, and evaluated a web-based cluster randomised kindergarten intervention, Pre-schoolers' Food Courage 2.0. The purpose of the current qualitative study was to explore kindergarten teachers' experience of imple…
Young women's and midwives' perspectives on improving nutritional support in pregnancy
Knowledge about the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease is independently associated with variation in diet quality during pregnancy
Environmental factors affecting development through embryogenesis, pregnancy, and infancy impact health through all subsequent stages of life. Known as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, this concept is widely accepted among health and social scientists. However, it is unclear whether DOHaD-based ideas are reaching the general public and/or influencing behaviour. This study thus investigated whether and under what…
How can we best use opportunities provided by routine maternity care to engage women in improving their diets and health
Pregnancy provides motivation for women to improve their diets and increase their physical activity. Opportunistic brief interventions delivered as part of routine primary care have produced improvements in patients' health behaviour. Consequently, there have been calls for midwives to use contacts during pregnancy in this way. This study explored the experiences of pregnant women and research midwives/nurses of a brief intervention called Health…

Why is changing health-related behaviour so difficult?
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that six common errors made in attempts to change behaviour have prevented the implementation of the scientific evidence base derived from psychology and sociology; to suggest a new approach which incorporates recent developments in the behavioural sciences. STUDY DESIGN: The role of health behaviours in the origin of the current epidemic of non-communicable disease is observed to have driven attempts to change behaviour…
Making every contact count
A total of 148 health and social care practitioners were trained in skills to support behaviour change: creating opportunities to discuss health behaviours, using open discovery questions, listening, reflecting and goal-setting. At three time points post-training, use of the skills was evaluated and compared with use of skills by untrained practitioners. Trained practitioners demonstrated significantly greater use of these client-centred skills t…

Measuring young women's self-efficacy for healthy eating
Healthy eating in women of childbearing age is critical to the health of future generations. Interventions that increase women's dietary self-efficacy may be particularly effective at improving healthy eating. However, no validated tool exists to measure self-efficacy for healthy eating in this specific population. We therefore designed a new questionnaire (the 8-Item Self-Efficacy for Healthy Diet Scale) using a think-aloud study and expert pane…
