Personalizing esketamine treatment in TRD and TRBD
These findings highlight the importance of a personalized treatment approach in treatment- resistant depressive episode patients. Esketamine may be particularly beneficial in reducing cognitive rigidity, improving mentalization, and breaking the cognitive inflexibility that contributes to sustained negative depressive thinking patterns. Further research is needed to refine patient stratification and optimize treatment strategies for individuals w…
Validation of the Italian Version of the STAR-MH Mental Health Screening Tool in a Sample of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Northern Italy
BACKGROUND: Asylum seekers and refugees (ASR) are at high risk of mental health disorders including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and anxiety. However, prevalence rates vary significantly due to methodological differences and the diverse socio-demographic characteristics of these populations. Access to mental health care is further complicated by language barriers, cultural differences, and systemic discri…
Bipolar Disorder
This paper presents a case study to support the hypothesis that religiosity and spirituality (R/S), as mood balancing factors, could facilitate the recovery process for patients suffering from bipolar disorder (BD) once they have been stabilized and are receiving appropriate support (e.g., in a residential rehabilitative center). After a succinct review of BD and R/S, the patient’s medical history and rehabilitation pathway are described, with a …
The challenge of diagnosing cultural syndromes
Influence of post-migration living difficulties on mental health among refugees and asylum seekers
BACKGROUND: The literature indicates an increasing interest in the mental health of refugees (R) and asylum seekers (AS) - particularly how it could be affected by previous exposure to trauma and violence - but less has been written about the issues they are forced to face during the post-migration period and how these also can affect mental health. Research shows that the mental health of R/AS is highly influenced by their post-migration conditi…

Knowledge and Use of Novel Psychoactive Substances in Italy
Global Storm of Stress-Related Psychopathological Symptoms
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health emergency requiring clinicians to be prepared to cope with the increase in the future incidence of trauma and stress-related psychopathological symptoms. The early detection of psychological distress and timely intervention are strongly recommended. Clinicians should also consider integrating new technologies such as virtual reality (VR) in the treatment of these trauma and stres…

Attitudes of Italian Psychiatrists Toward the Evaluation of Physical Comorbidities and Sexual Dysfunction in Patients With Schizophrenia. Implications for Clinical Practice
Treatment guidelines for patients with schizophrenia recommend evaluating their risk of physical comorbidities, especially since these patients are known to have decreased life expectancy due to comorbidities. Therefore, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first national survey conducted to investigate how Italian psychiatrists deal with the risk of physical comorbidities and sexual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. A sample of 750 p…

Estimating the Risk of Attempted Suicide Among Sexual Minority Youths
Importance: Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among adolescents. Sexual minority individuals are at a higher risk of suicide and attempted suicide, but a precise and systematic evaluation of this risk among sexual minority youths has not been documented to our knowledge. Objective: To examine the risk of attempted suicide among sexual minority adolescents, differentiating for each sexual minority group. Data Sources: Electronic databas…
Patterns of Management of Patients With Dual Disorder (Psychosis) in Italy
Patients with severe psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorders frequently suffer from concomitant substance use disorders (SUDs)-Dual Disorder (DD) patients. In order to better understand current practices for management of patients with psychotic episodes and concomitant SUD in Italy, we carried out a survey of psychiatrists on current routine practice among prescribers. These aspects can help to identify …
Early Post-stroke Depression and Mortality
Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common and serious complication after stroke. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the association between early PSD and mortality, considering depressive symptoms occurring within the first 3 months after the neurological event. Methods: This meta-analysis was conducted following Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines and based on studies indexe…

Disentangling the Association Between Child Abuse and Eating Disorders
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the association between distinct types of child abuse--sexual (CSA), physical (CPA), and emotional (CEA)--and different eating disorders (EDs). METHODS: Electronic databases were searched through January 2014. Studies reporting rates of CSA, CPA, and CEA in people with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED), as compared with indiv…

The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale in Italian Adolescent Populations
Transcranial magnetic stimulation of medial prefrontal cortex modulates implicit attitudes towards food
Male body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology
Body dissatisfaction is recognized as a robust risk factor for eating disorders. Despite over 80% of college men being body dissatisfied, not all men report several levels of eating disorder symptoms. In this study, we examined poor impulse control, social anxiety and internalization of media ideals as potential moderators. Data collected from 405 college-aged men were analysed, using latent variable structural equation modelling approach. All va…
Are the Male Body Dissatisfaction and Drive for Muscularity Scales reliable and valid instruments
The Drive for Muscularity Scale and Male Body Dissatisfaction Scale were developed for use with men and correspond to measures of drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction in women. The psychometric properties of these measures were evaluated in a sample of 655 Italian men, who completed other 11 measures also. Both scales demonstrated excellent internal consistency and temporal stability as well as criterion-related and concurrent validity. Bo…

Italian version of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Psychometric proprieties and measurement invariance across sex, BMI-status and age
Family Adaptation to Institutionalised Mentally Retarded Patients. A Preliminary Report on an Italian Population
Family interactive patterns were investigated in the relatives of 20 mentally retarded patients institutionalised in two centres in Northern Italy. Expressed emotion (EE) was used as evaluation instrument. The results show a surprisingly high rate (45%) of high EE, even in relatives of patients who did not live inside the family. High EE was positively correlated to the presence of behavioural disorders in the patients, as already shown for child…
