  • Promises and Perils of Decentralized Forest Governance

    Jae Soo Bae, Yeon‐su Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2014•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 3

Indonesia's forest management unit (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan or KPH) system can be a promising mechanism for balancing international and national interests for global carbon mitigation initiatives with local interests in project implementation. We discuss the potential role of the KPH system in implementing REDD+ (Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects and improving decentralized forest governance. Substantial fin…

  • Aspects of Culturally Competent Care are Associated With Less Emotional Burden Among Patients With Diabetes

    Geraldine R Slean, Elizabeth A Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•Referencias: 25

BACKGROUND: Diabetes distress is associated with poor diabetes self-management and worse clinical outcomes. Whether there is an association between patient experience of health care and degree of emotional burden (EB) of diabetes distress is not known. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether aspects of culturally competent care are associated with the EB of diabetes distress. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey consisting of face-to-face interviews. SUBJECT…

  • Young adult African American patients with type 2 diabetes

Open Access•Danielle Marie Hessler, Danielle Hessler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2012•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 25

This study examined age differences in support, BMI, and HbA1c among African American patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants were 158 African American adults with type 2 diabetes. Average HbA1c was 1% higher among patients aged 20-49 than patients 60-77, and double the number of younger patients had a BMI ≥35 than older patients. Younger patients reported less trust in their physician and greater disagreement with recommendations. They repor…

  • Is Self-Efficacy Associated With Diabetes Self-Management Across Race/Ethnicity and Health Literacy?

Urmimala Sarkar, Lawrence Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Diabetes Care•2006

OBJECTIVE—Although prior research demonstrated that improving diabetes self-efficacy can improve self-management behavior, little is known about the applicability of this research across race/ethnicity and health literacy levels. We examined the relationship between diabetes self-efficacy and self-management behavior in an urban, diverse, low-income population with a high prevalence of limited health literacy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—We admin…

  • Assessing Psychosocial Distress in Diabetes

William H Polonsky, Lawrence Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Diabetes Care•2005

OBJECTIVE—The purpose of this study was to describe the development of the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS), a new instrument for the assessment of diabetes-related emotional distress, based on four independent patient samples. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—In consultation with patients and professionals from multiple disciplines, a preliminary scale of 28 items was developed, based a priori on four distress-related domains: emotional burden subscale,…

  • Lessons in cultural competence

Open Access•Marilyn McKean Skaff, Catherine A Chesla et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2002•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 29

Recent publications have suggested that research with diverse ethnic groups requires a reexamination of the methods and measures that have been developed on European‐American samples. This is a methodological paper, sharing the lessons learned in the field by one research team. It reports on a study of persons with type 2 diabetes and their partners that included both Latino and European‐American participants. Involvement of a multiethnic researc…

  • Disease Management Status

Lawrence Fisher, Catherine A Chesla et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2000

The number of indicators of chronic disease management is large and no practical framework is available to guide selection for use in intervention programs. In addition, it is often difficult to integrate multiple disease management indicators into a comprehensive picture of patient functioning. The authors present a heuristic framework for creating a profile of disease management and an empirically based descriptive typology of disease managemen…

  • Family Relationships and Gender as Predictors of Romantic Intimacy in Young Adults

Shirley Feldman, S Shirley Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•1998•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 9

In a longitudinal study of the influence of gender and family factors on young adult romantic intimacy, we assessed at Time 1 (T1) family cohesion, flexible family control, respect for privacy and parents' marital satisfaction. Six years later, at Time 2 (T2), intimacy was assessed by 3 self-report measures: happiness in love, problems of insufficient intimacy, and romantic attachment style. Participants (n = 122; 60 men, 62 women) and their fami…

  • The Effect of Parents' Marital Satisfaction on Young Adults' Adaptation

Shirley Feldman, S Shirley Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•1997•Citada por: 5

Two questions were examined: (a) whether the effects of parents? marital satisfaction on offspring's adaptation are durable and continue to be manifest when offspring grow up, and (b) whether marital satisfaction operates through the mechanisms of family closeness or cohesion. To address these questions a community-based sample of 172 adolescents was studied twice: as teenagers aged 13—18 years, and approximately 6 years later as young adults age…

  • A nurse-managed smoking cessation program for hospitalized smokers

C Barr Taylor, Nancy Houston Miller et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 12

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated a nurse-managed smoking cessation program for smokers hospitalized for a variety of conditions. METHODS: Hospitalized patients who smoked prior to hospitalization and who were motivated to quit (n = 660) were randomized to intervention or usual-care groups and followed for the next year. The intervention included a meeting with the nurse-case manager; the use of a videotape, workbook, relaxation audiotape, and nic…

  • Is "What Is Good for the Goose Good for the Gander?" Sex Differences in Relations Between Adolescent Coping and Adult Adaptation

Shirley Feldman, S Shirley Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•1995•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 10

The way adolescents and adults cope with stress is associated with psychosocial adjustment and general adaptation. However, few studies have considered the possibility that the association between coping behavior and adaptation may be sex specific. We hypothesized that use of coping behaviors consistent with the feminine gender role would predict adult maladaptation for male adolescents and adults but not female adolescents and adults. One hundre…

  • Predicting immediate outcome of genetic counseling following genetic screening

    Lawrence Fisher, Peter T Rowley et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1979•Referencias: 2

Because genetic counseling provides potentially stressful information to the patient, it is important for the screener of genetic disorders (1) to create effective counseling strategies sensitive to groups of patients at risk for stressful outcome and (2) to identify and scale variables to designate such groups prior to counseling. In this study, patients in a health maintenance organization were screened for thalassemia trait as part of regular …
