  • The virtue of culture in understanding motivation at school

Open Access•François Guay, Frédéric Guay•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2016

Students' higher level of motivation is not based solely on intrapersonal factors as innate characteristics, but also on contexts in which students are supposed to develop their competencies. Thus, the cultural context is expected to shape motivation. Values and beliefs shared by a cultural group will affect students' motivation to learn and educational outcomes. This special issue on culture and motivation presents a collection of ground‐breakin…

  • Effects of gender, age, and diabetes duration on dietary self-care in adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Open Access•Stephanie Austin, Caroline Senécal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2011•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 43

This study tests a model derived from Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci and Ryan, 2000) to explain the mechanisms by which non-modifiable factors influence dietary self-care in adolescents with type 1 diabetes ( n = 289). SEM analyses adjusted for HbA1c levels revealed that longer diabetes duration and female gender were indicative of poorer dietary self-care. This effect was mediated by contextual and motivational factors as posited by SDT. …

  • Intrinsic, identified, and controlled types of motivation for school subjects in young elementary school children

Open Access•François Guay, Frédéric Guay et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2010•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 31

Background. There are two approaches to the differential examination of school motivation. The first is to examine motivation towards specific school subjects (between school subject differentiation). The second is to examine school motivation as a multidimensional concept that varies in terms of not only intensity but also quality (within school subject differentiation). These two differential approaches have led to important discoveries and pro…

  • Women's Depressive Symptoms during the Transition to Motherhood

Open Access•Lysanne Gauthier, François Guay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2010•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 30

This study investigates the longitudinal pattern of reciprocal relations between mothers' perceived satisfaction of their needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy and depressive symptoms during the transition to motherhood. Participants were 331 women assessed during their pregnancy and two and five months after delivery. Results based on structural equation modeling provide some support for the effect of perceived needs satisfaction on su…

  • Longitudinal Relations among Perceived Autonomy Support from Health Care Practitioners, Motivation, Coping Strategies and Dietary Compliance in a Sample of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Open Access•Etienne Julien, Caroline Senécal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2009•Referencias: 29

The purpose of this study was to test the causal ordering among perceived autonomy support from health care practitioners, motivation, coping strategies and compliance to dietary self-care activities. Using a cross-lagged panel model, we investigate how these variables relate to one another over a one-year period. A total of 365 adults with Type 2 diabetes participated in the study. Results suggest that autonomous motivation and active planning a…

  • The role of passion for teaching in intrapersonal and interpersonal outcomes.

Noémie Carbonneau, Robert J Vallerand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2008

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of passion in teachers' burnout symptoms, work satisfaction, and perceptions of positive student classroom behaviors. The dualistic model of passion (Vallerand et al., 2003) proposes 2 types of passion: harmonious and obsessive. In previous studies, harmonious passion has been shown to lead to adaptive outcomes (e.g., well-being and satisfaction), whereas obsessive passion has been shown to lead…

  • Does Task-Related Identified Regulation Moderate the Sociometer Effect? A Study of Performance Feedback, Perceived Inclusion, and State Self-Esteem

Open Access•François Guay, Frédéric Guay et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2008

The aim of this study was to understand the processes explaining the effects of private performance feedback (success vs. failure) on state self-esteem from the stance of sociometer theory and self-determination theory. We investigated whether or not the effect of private performance feedback on state self-esteem was mediated by perceived inclusion as a function of participants' level of task-related identified regulation (i.e., importance of the…

Open Access•François Guay, Frédéric Guay et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2008•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 22

Background The literature on the determinants of academic motivation indicates that social and affective processes connected to students' interpersonal relationships are central elements in understanding students' academic motivation and other school-related outcomes.Aims The aim of this study was to answer the following questions: Does autonomous motivation drive representations of relatedness, do representations of relatedness drive autonomous …

  • Academic self-concept and academic achievement

François Guay, Frédéric Guay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2003

This study tests theoretical and developmental models of the causal ordering between academic selfconcept and academic achievement in a multicohort-multioccasion design (i.e., 3 age cohorts, each with 3 measurement waves).Participants were students in Grades 2, 3, and 4 from 10 elementary schools. The structural equation model for the total sample supported a reciprocal-effects model, indicating that achievement has an effect on self-concept (skil…

  • Role conflict and academic procrastination

Open Access•Caroline Senécal, Etienne Julien et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 31

The purpose of the present study was to propose and test a model of role conflict and academic procrastination. This model posits that non‐self‐determined motivations toward school and interpersonal relationships are positively related to role conflict between these two life domains. In turn, role conflict between school and interpersonal relationships is expected to be positively related to academic procrastination. Participants were 292 univers…

Robert J Vallerand, Michelle S Fortier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Citada por: 55

The purpose of this study was to propose and test a motivational model of high school dropout. The model posits that teachers, parents, and the school administration's behaviors toward students influence students' perceptions of competence and autonomy. The less autonomy supportive the social agents' behaviors are, the less positive are students' perceptions of competence and autonomy. In turn, the less positive students' perceptions are, the low…
