Educational assessment in Canada revisited
This article provides an overview of Canada’s decentralised education systems and describes recent changes in provincial, national, and international large-scale assessment programmes. We focus our analysis on the last 17 years to describe notable developments in policy and practice across Canada’s 10 autonomous provincial jurisdictions and 3 territories. The discussion examines the continued tensions that exist between formative and summative pu…
The AI 3 Model
The evolution of machine learning and large language models (commonly referred to as “artificial intelligence” [AI]) presents both opportunities and challenges for teaching and learning across K–12 and higher education contexts globally. Among the most pressing concerns is that these tools can undermine the integrity of student assessment and evaluation systems. This article investigates this timely issue by examining the intersections between AI…
Advancing e-assessment for learning in the primary EFL writing classroom
While research on teacher implementation of e-assessment for learning (E-AfL) in EFL writing is conducted increasingly at the tertiary level, the scope of research on primary teachers’ E-AfL in writing is limited, particularly regarding how teacher professional learning influences their actual practices. The study moves along this line of inquiry and investigates the impact of a year-long collaborative teacher professional learning opportunity on…
Preservice teachers' assessment decisions
Teachers' conceptions of fairness influence their approaches to assessment. Perceptions of fairness underpin how teachers legitimate their values and provide reasons for teachers to defend assessment decisions and actions. This study therefore examined fairness conceptions at a critical stage in teachers' journey towards assessment capacity: their perceptions as teacher candidates. Specifically, we investigated 228 preservice teachers' conception…
From challenge to innovation
We are at a critical moment for assessment in schools. Teachers are called to navigate advances in classroom assessment research, top‐down assessment policies, and lingering effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic on teaching and learning. Embedded in this context are also systemic challenges to teachers’ assessment practice. This paper analyses these challenges to characterise the current context for teachers’ assessment work and considers teachers’ in…
Mapping Musical Mobilities
This article asserts that classical music has been viewed in some quarters as a product of particular national cultures, with little regard paid to the ways in which mobile phenomena can contribute to its production, whether in the form of mobile people, objects, or concepts. This paper turns to notions of mobility as a means of exploring how musical cultures can be animated. It explores, too, the possibilities of particular forms of “mapping” as…
A wonderful day and a wonderful crossing!’
1940 saw the mass internment of so‐called ‘enemy aliens’ within Britain as a response to the rapid advance of Nazi forces on the continent; this meant that innocent civilians—including many who were already refugees from Nazism—were incarcerated in camps across the country, particularly within the tourist spaces of the Isle of Man. We do not seek to argue that internees simply experienced internment as being akin to a holiday, or that the overarc…
Leadership in times of crisis
Systemic disruptions and uncertainties resulting from the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic have put extraordinary pressure on system-level educational leadership worldwide. Despite often being seen as drivers of thinking and change, system leaders had few, if any, precedents to draw from on how to lead effectively through such crises. This paper examines Ontario secondary school teachers’ (N = 17) perspectives on system-level educational leadership du…
Behind the Virtual Curtain
In this practice note, the authors discuss techniques they used to bring the collaborative approaches to evaluation (CAE) principles to life in a virtual setting. Following their CAE evaluation of an extracurricular post-secondary program, the authors examined artifacts of their work using CAE as a deductive framework. Their analysis highlighted numerous strategies to enact the CAE principles and the importance of modern technologies to facilitat…
A Stereometry of Non-Memory
This article presents a consideration of W.G. Sebald’s 2001 work Austerlitz—his final novel—according to a variety of spatial and cartographic concepts, including ‘fluid cartography,’ and the notion of countermapping. Particularly, the article will explore the eponymous protagonist’s sense that ‘time [does] not exist at all, only various spaces interlocking according to the rules of a higher form of stereometry,’ and will demonstrate how this sub…

Third space professional staff have been emerging as leaders and key contributors to higher education institutions around the world. These staff are employed to support initiatives in such areas as teaching and learning, research management, student services, community engagement, and strategic initiatives, some of which were previously the sole domains of academics. Positioned between these academic and professional spheres, four professionals f…
Access and Equity in Ontario Teacher Education
Access, equity, and equitable representation are ongoing challenges in teacher education. While many Canadian teacher education programs identify equity and diversity as key values, these values do not always result in rates of representation that reflect the student population. Minoritized teacher candidates also experience our programs in unique ways, creating gaps between university equity statements and the lived experiences of our students. …
